Bangladesh Government Paves the Way for Fisheries Sector Growth with Dedicated Economic Zone

Bangladesh’s Fisheries and Livestock Minister, SM Rezaul Karim, announced the government’s intention to establish a dedicated economic zone exclusively for fisheries. This declaration came during a workshop organized by the Support to Sustainable Graduation Project of the Economic Relations Division (ERD), focusing on ‘Fisheries subsidies in the context of least developed country graduation and way forward’ at the National Economic Council in Dhaka.

Responding to demands from stakeholders within the fisheries industry for a specialized zone for fish processing, Minister Karim assured comprehensive government support, including assistance in land acquisition, as part of a broader strategy to combat overfishing in the sea and protect endangered species.

The government, underlining its commitment to environmental sustainability, is rigorously implementing measures to discourage overfishing. Minister Karim emphasized that the success of these proposed economic zones hinges on enthusiastic investments from private entrepreneurs, as highlighted in a statement by the ERD. This initiative reflects a proactive step towards sustainable economic development and conservation within Bangladesh’s vital fisheries sector.
