CMFRI Scientists Honored with Prestigious NAAS Recognitions

Two eminent scientists from the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) have been bestowed with esteemed honors by the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), highlighting CMFRI’s pivotal contributions to fisheries science research.

Dr. Eldho Varghese, Senior Scientist, has been elected as a NAAS Fellow, while Dr. Sumithra TG, Scientist, has been named a NAAS Associate. These recognitions were awarded in acknowledgment of their groundbreaking contributions to agricultural research.

The NAAS, a premier institution in agricultural sciences, awards the ‘Fellowship’ to distinguished professionals for their scientific excellence. The ‘Associateship’ is reserved for young scientists under 40 years of age, demonstrating exceptional research in agriculture-related fields.

Dr. Varghese earned recognition for his contributions to statistical and ecosystem modeling, fish stock assessment, and the application of deep learning in marine fisheries research. His innovative work includes creating computational tools for advanced data analysis and designing experimental frameworks tailored for fisheries and agricultural research.

Dr. Sumithra TG was honored for her research in marine fish microbiology and fish health, focusing on antimicrobial resistance and the marine fish microbiome. Her work has led to eco-friendly innovations in bioethanol production, sustainable fish waste management, and guidelines for responsible antibiotic use in aquaculture.

Established in 1990, the NAAS is a leading body fostering agricultural sciences across disciplines such as fisheries, animal husbandry, and agro-industry. Through recognitions like these, the Academy emphasizes cutting-edge research and policy development to address critical challenges in agriculture and allied fields.

This acknowledgment underscores CMFRI’s role in advancing sustainable fisheries science and promoting scientific excellence on a national and international scale.
