Concerns Arise as Andhra Pradesh Plans Development of 15 No Fishing Beaches in Vizag

VISAKHAPATNAM: Andhra Pradesh government’s announcement to develop 15 beaches in Vizag City, restricting fishing activities on these shores, has raised concerns among thousands of fishermen dependent on marine livelihood. The designated beaches include prominent locations such as Bhimunipatnam, Pandavula Pancha, Annavaram, Pedangamayyapalem, Bhimili GVMC Cheena, Chalam, Saiyappada, Ramadrirak, Thimmapuram, Madhurawada, IT, Endada, Sitakonda, Lawsens Bay, Yarada, and two others.

Fishermen, whose livelihood relies on hunting and selling marine fish, fear that this decision could adversely impact their employment. The CPM Visakha district committee has issued a press release warning of potential resistance if the government’s move threatens the employment of fishermen under the pretext of beach development in Vizag city.

“Thousands of fishermen depend on the sea for their livelihood. Among the 15 notified beaches, there are locations where fishermen keep their boats. There is apprehension about the potential loss of fishing opportunities and employment for these fishermen, and the government does not seem to be addressing this issue”, pointed a local people’s representative.
