Gandhinagar: The coastal region of Gujarat is grappling with a significant challenge as the state government revealed the cancellation of registrations for 3,434 fishing boats in the fiscal year 2022-23. According to government sources, these cancellations were a result of fishermen failing to complete the mandatory physical verification process. It was emphasized that registered fishermen are eligible for essential subsidies on items such as diesel, fishing nets, and other equipment provided by the fisheries department.
However, in response to this revelation, the All India Fishermen Association highlighted a concerning trend. President Veljibhai Masani disclosed that over 5,000 boats along the coastline, spanning from Kutch to Valsad, are currently inactive. Fishermen, facing economic challenges aggravated by the aftermath of the pandemic, are reportedly refraining from venturing into the sea due to inadequate remuneration for their catch.
Masani expressed the association’s concern, stating, “The value of the wood of the boats that are lying unused will not be more than Rs 5 lakh.” This indicates not only the economic strain on the fishermen but also the potential loss of valuable maritime assets that remain stationary along the coastline.
The issue underscores the broader economic impact on the fishing community, emphasizing the urgent need for solutions to ensure fair compensation for their catch. As Gujarat grapples with these challenges, discussions within the state assembly and among relevant stakeholders are anticipated to address the concerns of fishermen and explore strategies for revitalizing this crucial sector.
