ICAR CIFA Organized Pig Cum Fish Farming Programme in Assams Karbi Anglong District

The ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIFA), Bhubaneswar, held a special scientist-farmer interface program in Sarmeen Hanse, Karbi Anglong district of Assam. The focus was on enhancing aquaculture productivity through integrated farming practices.

Dr. Pramoda Kumar Sahoo, Director of ICAR-CIFA, stressed the importance of integrating aqua ponds with pig farming to improve productivity. Dr. S. Adhikari, principal scientist and coordinator of ICAR-CIFA’s NEH programs, highlighted the developmental activities aimed at improving livelihoods in the region.

Shri Ratneswar Rongpi, District Fisheries Development Officer, Karbi Anglong, emphasized utilizing pond dikes for pig farming to maximize returns per unit area. Dr. C. K. Misra, principal scientist and co-coordinator of ICAR-CIFA’s NEH programs, outlined the objectives of the event.

The technical sessions provided aquafarmers with management solutions for better results in pig-cum-fish farming. Fish fingerlings, piglets, and pig feed were distributed, and visits were made to demonstration ponds. Scientists discussed feeding, health, and soil and water quality management at each farmer’s pond, ensuring improved outcomes for beneficiaries.

Over 30 participants, including scientists, extension officials, and progressive farmers from Karbi Anglong district, attended the program, reflecting its importance in promoting sustainable farming practices in the region.
