Morocco Bolsters Marine Research Capabilities with New Coastal Research Vessel Ibn Sina II

In a major stride toward advancing marine research, Morocco’s National Institute of Fishery Research (INRH) has unveiled its latest asset, the ‘Ibn Sina-II,’ a cutting-edge coastal research vessel measuring 22 meters. The inauguration ceremony, held in Agadir on November 27, 2023, signifies a pivotal moment in Morocco’s commitment to in-depth exploration of the national coastal marine ecosystems.

Costing a total of 34 million Moroccan Dirhams, the ‘Ibn Sina-II’ underscores Morocco’s collaborative efforts with the European Union in the realms of maritime fisheries and ocean sustainability. The vessel boasts state-of-the-art features, including advanced onboard laboratories for biological and chemical analysis, cutting-edge oceanographic measurement devices, acoustic echo-sounding capabilities, seabed mapping tools, and mechanisms for benthic sample collection.

Furthermore, the vessel facilitates the deployment of passive fishing gears and remotely operated vehicles, augmenting its versatility for comprehensive research endeavours.

With an impressive autonomy of five days, the ‘Ibn Sina-II’ can navigate previously inaccessible coastal zones, significantly expanding the horizons of marine research. This advancement aligns with Morocco’s strategic vision to bolster its marine research capabilities and contribute to a deeper understanding of coastal ecosystems.

The vessel’s launch marks a crucial milestone in Morocco’s pursuit of sustainable marine practices and underscores its commitment to fostering advancements in marine science and technology.
