The National Agricultural Science Complex in New Delhi hosted the launch workshop of the All-India Network Project on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in Fisheries and Livestock. The event marked a significant step towards combating AMR in farmed animals and fishes across the country.
The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). The event also saw the participation of prominent figures in the field, including Dr. J. K. Jena, Deputy Director General (Fisheries Science) at ICAR and National Coordinator of AINP-AMR, Dr. Ashok Kumar, Assistant Director General (Animal Health) at ICAR, Dr. Uttam Kumar Sarkar, Director of the ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR), Lucknow, and Co-coordinator of AINP-AMR.
The workshopโs agenda includes reviewing the progress of the project, expanding the network, developing an operational framework, and outlining a future surveillance roadmap for AMR in farmed animals and fishes. The initiative is supported by 31 partners from ICAR Fisheries and Animal Science institutes, as well as Central Agricultural Universities and State Agricultural Universities across India. The ICAR-NBFGR in Lucknow will coordinate the project.
This collaborative effort underscores the commitment to address the pressing issue of antimicrobial resistance, ensuring sustainable and healthy livestock and fisheries sectors in India.
