Rare Sardine Run Delights Locals in Pernem Goa

Thousands of sardine fish have been captivating locals in Pernem, Goa, as they surface near the beach in what experts describe as a “rare” phenomenon known as a ‘sardine run.’ This unique event involves shoals of sardines fluttering in shallow waters along the coast at Keri-Terekhol, offering both a visual spectacle and a plentiful catch for the residents.

A viral video captures the mesmerizing sight of sardines rushing out of the water, drawing people to collect the abundant marine species. Dr. Baban Ingole, a former researcher from CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), explained that such events are very rare and typically occur due to sudden changes in the sea surface water temperature where sardines reside.

Describing the occurrence as a “sardine run,” Ingole highlighted that fluctuations in sea surface temperature can induce the migration of sardines in larger numbers, sometimes leading them to get trapped in shallow waters.

He emphasized that these fishes often travel in search of food, taking advantage of nutrient-rich water brought to the surface when deeper water rises. This, in turn, triggers high food production, with sardines feeding on the fresh phytoplankton-rich food.
