Record Growth: Hilsa Fish Achieves Remarkable Size in Pond Aquaculture

record growth hilsa fish achieves remarkable size in pond aquaculture

The Hilsa fish (Tenualosa ilisha), renowned as a prized delicacy in Southeast Asia, has captured the attention of researchers for its potential in aquaculture. Recent efforts supported by various research projects sponsored by the Government of India, particularly under ICAR-National Agricultural Science Fund, have yielded promising results in bringing Hilsa into aquaculture.

A significant objective of the ICAR-NASF project phase II was the development of Hilsa broodstock. Juveniles of Hilsa were reared in ponds across different locations, including freshwater zones at Rahara, brackish water zones at Kakdwip, and intermediate zones at Jamitya village in Kolaghat, West Bengal. The broodstock ponds, supplied with water from River Rupnarayana, witnessed commendable growth and survival rates.

In a recent monitoring endeavour, a remarkable milestone was achieved at Kolaghat, where a Hilsa fish weighing 689 grams and measuring 43.6 centimetres was recorded after three years of rearing. This achievement marks the highest reported size attained through such aquaculture attempts in India, showcasing the potential of pond-reared Hilsa.

The growth of pond-reared Hilsa surpassed that of open water, indicating the feasibility of Hilsa aquaculture. The fishes were provided with their preferred food of live zooplankton along with specially designed feed. Water quality in the ponds maintained optimal conditions, with freshwater characteristics and adequate levels of dissolved oxygen.

The success of Hilsa aquaculture holds promise for both conservation efforts and commercial production. By harnessing innovative approaches and leveraging favorable environmental conditions, aquaculture initiatives like this contribute to sustainable fisheries development in India.
