Surging Inland Fish Production and Robust Fisheries Investments A Comprehensive Overview of Indias Aquatic Advancements

Inland fish production has witnessed substantial growth from the fiscal year 2014-15 to 2022-23, surging from 66.87 lakh tonnes to an impressive 131.13 lakh tonnes.

Over the past three fiscal years (FY 2020-21 to FY 2022-23) and the ongoing financial year (2023-24), a significant central budget of Rs. 4810 crore has been earmarked for the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). Out of this allocation, Rs. 3345.28 crore has been disbursed to various State Governments, Union Territories, and other implementing agencies to foster the development of the fisheries and aquaculture sector.

In terms of economic contribution, the Fisheries sector holds a noteworthy position, contributing Rs. 1,47,519 crores to the total Gross Value Added (GVA) at constant prices in the fiscal year 2021-2022. This constitutes approximately 1.07% of the total national GVA and 6.86% of the Agricultural GVA.

According to data from the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence & Statistics, the total import value of fish and related products stood at Rs. 1,949.51 crores in the year 2022-23, marking a notable increase from the Rs. 1,271.11 crores recorded in the year 2019-20. The import figures for fish and related products have been consistently tracked since 2019.

The total export of fish and related products is Rs. 63,969.14 crores in the year 2022-23 against Rs. 46,662.85 crores in the year 2019-20. The year-wise export details of fish and related products since 2019 is as under:
