Tripura’s College of Fisheries Explores Antibiotic Free Fish Feed

Agartala: The College of Fisheries in Tripura, affiliated with the Central Agricultural University Imphal, has launched research aimed at developing medicated fish fodder as a substitute for antibiotics. The project seeks to promote healthier aquaculture practices by utilizing scientifically formulated feed, reducing the industry’s dependence on antibiotics.

“We are conducting several research studies, and one key focus is to replace antibiotics with medicated feed,” said Professor Arun Bhai Patel, Dean of the College. “This approach aims to improve fish health and minimize the risks associated with antibiotic use.”

The college has also established a fish museum that houses a comprehensive collection of species native to the northeastern states. “We’ve catalogued 303 different fish varieties from across all eight districts of Tripura in the museum,” Professor Patel added. “Our team has travelled extensively to collect these species, ensuring a diverse representation of the region’s aquatic life.”

Through these initiatives, the College of Fisheries aims to contribute to sustainable aquaculture practices and promote biodiversity conservation in the northeastern region.
