ICAR Scientists Crack the Breeding Code of Rare Himalayan Fish Channa andrao, Opening New Opportunities for Ornamental Fish Farming

A significant breakthrough in India’s ornamental fisheries sector could pave the way for the conservation and commercial farming of one of the country’s rare endemic fish species. Scientists from the ICAR–National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBFGR), Lucknow, in collaboration with Gauhati University, have successfully developed a captive breeding protocol for Channa andrao, a rare ornamental snakehead native to the Eastern Himalayan Biodiversity Hotspot.

The research, published in the journal Fish Physiology and Biochemistry, marks an important step towards reducing dependence on wild collection while creating new opportunities for sustainable ornamental fish farming and commercial seed production.

A Rare Ornamental Fish from the Eastern Himalayas

Channa andrao is a small freshwater snakehead fish found in the streams and wetlands of the Eastern Himalayan Biodiversity Hotspot, one of the world’s most ecologically significant regions.
