Luis Planas, the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, underscored the vital role of fisheries and aquaculture products in ensuring food security within the European Union. Participating in the Informal Meeting of Fisheries Ministers in Bruges, Belgium, Planas praised the efforts of the primary sector in providing citizens with diverse and high-quality food options.
Organized by the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU, the meeting facilitated discussions on the need for structured dialogue with farmers, livestock breeders, and fishermen to address their challenges and find solutions. Planas highlighted the importance of European-level dialogue, echoing successful practices in Spain, to tackle future challenges collectively.
Spain reaffirmed its strong support for the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), crediting it with elevating Community products to exceptional standards of quality, sustainability, and safety. Planas advocated for policies promoting fish consumption, citing its nutritional benefits and low carbon footprint.
Regarding sustainability and profitability, Planas emphasized the significance of modernizing the fishing sector. He stressed that sustainable fishing hinges on profitability, advocating for measures to enhance competitiveness and profitability within the EU.
Spain advocates directing the European Maritime Fund for Fisheries and Aquaculture (EMFF) towards fleet renewal to equip the sector with modern, efficient, and decarbonized vessels. Planas highlighted the need for increased investment to ensure a safer, more attractive fishing industry for young people.
He repeated Spain’s commitment to decarbonization and enhancing fleet sustainability. Planas recalled productive discussions during the Informal Meeting of Fisheries Ministers in Vigo in July 2023, under the Spanish presidency, focusing on transitioning to a fleet less reliant on fossil fuels and providing improved conditions for fishermen.
Planas’ remarks underscore Spain’s dedication to fostering a sustainable, competitive, and prosperous fishing sector, essential for food security and economic growth within the EU.
