Fishermen Threaten Water Protest Over Solar Power Project in Chhatrapati Sambhajinaga, Maharashtra.

by Fishery News 2024-01-31
written by Fishery News

Fishermen from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and neighbouring Ahmednagar district are on the brink of drastic action as the government hesitates to cancel the proposed floating solar power project at Jayakwadi dam. The Save Jayakwadi Fishermen committee has issued a warning, stating that if their demands are not met, they will resort to Jal Samadhi starting from February 7th.

In a strongly worded letter addressed to various government authorities and public representatives, the committee has raised concerns about the potential dire consequences of the project on the livelihoods of fishermen and their families. Despite opposition, Union Minister of State for Finance, Bhagwat Karad, has remained steadfast in his support for the project, promising to engage with the fishermen before proceeding with the works.

According to Bajrang Limbore, president of the committee, the fishermen believe that the project is being pushed forward unlawfully and will severely impact their means of living. They argue that the installation of large solar panels within the reservoir of Jayakwadi dam will obstruct sunlight, crucial for aquatic flora and fauna, consequently disrupting traditional fishing activities and threatening bird populations in the sanctuary.

Further aggravating the situation, the fishermen allege that the feasibility report supporting the project’s approval has been influenced by central and state authorities. They specifically point to the construction of a pulling station as part of the floating solar power plant in Mauje Katpur, Paithan tehsil, as evidence of the project’s advancement without proper consideration for environmental and livelihood concerns.

In response to these allegations, Union Minister Bhagwat Karad has dismissed the claims as baseless, asserting that consultations with the fishermen community have already taken place, with room for further discussions to address their apprehensions. However, tensions continue to mount as the fishermen remain resolute in their opposition to the project’s implementation.

written by Fishery News

In a coordinated effort, naval forces from India and Seychelles successfully thwarted separate pirate hijackings in the waters off Somalia, rescuing a total of 23 fishermen hailing from Iran and Sri Lanka.

The Seychelles Dรฉfense Forces, along with the coast guard, executed a daring operation to reclaim a Sri Lankan fishing vessel seized by armed Somali pirates. This courageous maneuver led to the apprehension of three hijackers and ensured the safe return of the six Sri Lankan fishermen onboard. Following the rescue, the vessel was escorted to the Seychelles, marking a triumph in the face of maritime piracy threats.

Meanwhile, the Indian navy intercepted an Iranian fishing vessel, named Iman, which had fallen victim to pirate aggression along the eastern coast of Somalia. Through swift and decisive action, all 17 crew members were liberated from captivity, and the vessel was restored to safety under naval protection.

These rescues underscore the ongoing threat posed by Somali pirates, prompting heightened vigilance among regional authorities. The prompt response by Indian and Seychellois forces not only safeguarded the lives of the fishermen but also upheld maritime security in the volatile waters of the region.

Yadadris Muktapur Lake Faces Fish Apocalypse Due to Herbicide Usage Threatening Hyderabads Fish Supply Chain

Yadadri’s Muktapur Lake Faces Fish Apocalypse Due to Herbicide Usage, Threatening Hyderabad’s Fish Supply Chain

by Fishery News 2024-01-30
written by Fishery News

Muktapur Lake, on the outskirts of Hyderabad in the Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri district experienced a devastating fishkill recently. Over the span of several days, fish valued at 25 lakh were reported dead in the lake, with the primary cause attributed to the use of herbicide sprayed via drones to combat water hyacinth growth.

During the event, Muktapur Lake, linked to the heavily polluted Musi river, served as a critical source of fish for Hyderabad residents, sparking concerns among local communities about the potential threats posed to aquatic life and public health by the contamination of lakes along the Musi river course.

According to reports from the Bhoodhan Pochampally mandal revenue officer, Veerabai, the fishkill was a direct consequence of herbicide spraying in a neighbouring tank, rather than pollution originating from the Musi river. However, apprehensions lingered regarding the overall pollution levels in the area.

Over a period of five days, dead fish were observed floating in the Narsappa Cheruvu of Muktapur, which spans 110 acres and is managed by a local fisherman cooperative society. G Shankar, a member of the society, estimated a loss of 25 lakh and subsequently filed a police complaint against K Ramachandra, deemed responsible for the herbicide spraying.

Despite concerns about pollution, the importance of continuing fish farming in the region was emphasized, particularly due to the supply of fish from Muktapur to Hyderabad markets.

Environmental activist Pittala Srisailam underscored the widespread contamination of lakes in Bhoodhan Pochampally due to pollution from the Musi river, including the sale of soil with high contaminant levels to the brick industry.

Experts, including Professor Donti Narasimha Reddy, suggested that glyphosate herbicide may have been the primary cause of the fishkill, warning of potential bioaccumulation of heavy metals in fish. Reddy stressed the urgent need for proper testing to ensure the safety of fish supplied to consumers in Hyderabad.

written by Fishery News

The Kasargod district fisheries department has made significant strides against illegal fishing activities, amassing a substantial sum of Rs. 50 lakh in fines over the past six months.

A coordinated operation, involving the fisheries department alongside Kumble, Bekala, Trikaripur, and coastal police units, led to the seizure of a Karnataka-owned fishing vessel engaged in nocturnal fishing activities in the waters off Manjeshwar. This action comes in response to regulations prohibiting mechanized boats from operating within a 12-nautical-mile radius from the Kerala coastline.

The crackdown aims to address the concerns of traditional fishermen who have been adversely affected by unauthorized fishing practices. According to district fisheries deputy director K A Labeeb, these stringent measures underscore the department’s commitment to upholding regulations and safeguarding the livelihoods of local fishermen.

ADB and Australis Invest $15 Million in Vietnam’s Ocean-Based Aquaculture

by Fishery News 2024-01-29
written by Fishery News

HA NOI โ€” In a collaborative effort, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Australis Holdings, Inc. (Australis) have allocated $15 million to bolster climate-resilient barramundi and seaweed aquaculture in Vietnam.

The investment aims to enhance working capital for expanding Australis’ operations in Van Phong Bay, central Vietnam, and to establish a secondary regional production hub in the southern region. Additionally, the Climate Innovation and Development Fund (CIDF), managed by ADB, will grant an additional $3 million to support the initiative.

Suzanne Gaboury, ADB’s Director General for Private Sector Operations, highlighted the global dependence on seafood for protein, amidst declining fish stocks due to overfishing and climate change. Gaboury underscored ADB’s role in supporting Vietnam’s sustainable aquaculture development, particularly in large-scale production of high-value species for export, emphasizing the potential of aquaculture for low-carbon protein production and its resilience to climate risks.

Australis, renowned as the world’s largest barramundi producer, will utilize ADB’s financing to expand operations in central Vietnam and establish a new production hub targeting an annual barramundi output of 50,000 tons. CEO Josh Goldman expressed appreciation for the support, outlining plans for growth and sustainable aquaculture practices.

The CIDF grant will be channelled to Australis’ subsidiary, Greener Grazing LLC, to fund research and development into asparagopsis taxiformis seaweed cultivation for commercial ocean farming. This seaweed species has shown promise in reducing methane emissions in cattle feed and can contribute to ocean ecosystem resilience and carbon sequestration.

Launched in September 2021, CIDF, backed by a $25 million philanthropic commitment from Bloomberg Philanthropies and Goldman Sachs, aims to mobilize up to $500 million in private sector and governmental investments for sustainable low-carbon economic development.

Established in 2006, Australis operates as a vertically integrated entity, spanning breeding, hatcheries, ocean farms, processing, packaging, and export, with its consumer brand, The Better Fishยฎ, focusing on quality and sustainability.

ADB remains dedicated to fostering prosperity, inclusivity, resilience, and sustainability in Asia and the Pacific, while striving to eliminate extreme poverty. With 68 member countries, including 49 from the region, ADB continues its mission since its inception in 1966.

Andhra Pradesh’s Aquaculture Sector Poised for Increased Investment: An Overview

by Fishery News 2024-01-29
written by Fishery News

Andhra Pradesh stands as a beacon of success in the realm of aquaculture, offering a lucrative opportunity for investors eyeing the sector. With its thriving industry contributing significantly to the state’s economic prosperity, Andhra Pradesh has positioned itself as a prime destination for aquaculture ventures.

Ranked at the forefront of aquaculture and marine exports, Andhra Pradesh has garnered attention for its conducive environment for investment in the sector. As the state gears up to host the Global Investors Summit in Visakhapatnam on March 3 and 4, government officials express confidence in attracting further investments into the burgeoning aquaculture industry.

Blessed with favourable climatic conditions, abundant water resources, and an extensive coastline stretching approximately 974 kilometers, Andhra Pradesh offers an ideal setting for aquaculture activities. The state plays a pivotal role in India’s seafood exports, boasting the highest production of eggs, fish, and shrimp while securing the top position in marine exports during the fiscal year 2021-22.

Currently, aquaculture occupies 2.12 lakh hectares of land, with 1.38 lakh farmers actively engaged in the sector across the state. Complementing this infrastructure are 111 cold storage facilities with a combined storage capacity of 2.27 metric tonnes of aqua products.

To bolster the sector further, the government extends support to aqua farmers through various initiatives. Subsidized power is provided to farmers cultivating in areas under 10 acres falling within designated aqua zones, benefitting approximately 26,000 aquaculture farmers presently.

Additionally, the government undertakes measures such as subsidizing pond and tank construction, establishing hatcheries, and organizing training programs for farmers to enhance productivity and efficiency in the sector. The establishment of an Aquatic Quarantine Facility underscores the state’s commitment to ensuring the quality of exported aquaculture products.

Moreover, with the development of six inland waterways and nine fishing harbours, Andhra Pradesh aims to enhance sea connectivity, thereby unlocking the full potential of its expansive coastlineโ€”the second largest in the country.

As Andhra Pradesh continues to pave the way for sustainable growth and development in the aquaculture sector, the upcoming Global Investors Summit serves as a pivotal platform to showcase the state’s vast potential and attract strategic investments that will further propel its trajectory of success.
