A consortium led by the University of Copenhagen, in collaboration with Aarhus University and several industry partners, embarks on a pioneering four-year project named SeaFree. This initiative is designed to advance a closed, eco-friendly cycle on land, leveraging residual nutrients and CO2 from shrimp and fish farming to cultivate seaweed for applications in the food and healthcare sectors.

Professor Marianne Thomsen from the University of Copenhagen’s Department of Food Science emphasized the project’s core objective in a recent press release. SeaFree aims to harness seaweed production as a means to absorb and convert emissions from land-based aquaculture into a valuable product. The harvested seaweed will be utilized for dietary supplements, with potential applications in preventing diabetes and innovating sustainable food products. Beyond mitigating emissions, the seaweed produced is not only environmentally friendly but also rich in umami flavor.

The project kicks off with a container setup utilizing Plug’n’Play technology, featuring eight 1,000-liter tanks within a 40ft container. This innovative system, combining saltwater, CO2, nutrients, and LED lights, can generate a full batch of seaweed in just one week, showcasing promising export potential. Thomsen highlighted that SeaFree integrates cutting-edge recycling technology for land-based shrimp and fish farming. Beyond emission capture, the system recirculates surplus heat from the plants to the Plug’n’Play technology. Additionally, the project introduces a novel technology to use surplus heat for drying seaweed, which is then supplied to the healthcare industry.

The end product encompasses climate-friendly fish, shrimp, and sea lettuce—a nutritious, fiber- and protein-rich seaweed variety. Sea lettuce, in particular, serves a dual purpose as both a dietary supplement and an edible accompaniment to seafood.

Professor Thomsen envisions significant global impact if this method is adopted universally by land-based shrimp and fish farms. The SeaFree project, funded with DKK14.4 million (€1.9 million) by Innovation Fund Denmark, has garnered collaboration from industry partners including Pure Algae, DryingMate, Food Diagnostics, Sigrid Therapeutics, XOventure GmbH/Rigi Care, KOST, SOF Odden Caviar, and HanseGarnelen.

As the fishing industry faces mounting pressures worldwide, aquafarming emerges as a potential sustainable solution. Fisheries conservation expert Prof Michel Kaiser suggests that the UAE could pioneer a unique approach by establishing underground aquafarming facilities to mitigate the impact of the country’s extreme climate.

Prof Kaiser, Chief Scientist and Professor of Fisheries Conservation at Heriot-Watt University, proposes harnessing abundant sunlight for energy-intensive aquafarms, making them sustainable using solar power. He envisions moving marine species production onto land and utilizing underground facilities to regulate temperature, given the energy-intensive nature of such operations. The vast desert lands away from coastal areas provide ample space for these innovative facilities.

While the UAE already has an aquaculture sector, including companies like Al Jaraf Fisheries and Fish Farm, Prof Kaiser’s vision aligns with addressing environmental concerns associated with overfishing. Research indicates that the Arabian Gulf and UAE’s east coast waters are among the most at risk globally.

With the UAE’s average per capita annual fish consumption exceeding the global average and the population continuing to grow, aquafarming could play a crucial role in meeting demand sustainably. Prof Kaiser emphasizes the potential of aquaculture not only in providing food but also contributing to marine species conservation through the rearing and releasing of fish.

The upcoming ‘What will we eat?’ summit at Expo 2020 Dubai will feature discussions on sustainable food production, with Prof Kaiser participating in a panel on ‘How to feed the world without destroying the planet.’ The summit aims to explore innovative solutions to global food challenges.

The large, carnivorous fish native to North America, with a potential length of up to eight feet, poses a significant threat to local fish species.

Government officials and scientists express alarm at the potential impact of the alligator gar on Dal Lake’s ecosystem. Shafeeqa Peer, a scientist with LCMA, emphasizes the fish’s predatory nature and its ban in certain parts of India, raising concerns about its threat to the natural species of Dal Lake.

The unexpected discovery has heightened fears of biodiversity disruption in Dal Lake, home to 17 distinct fish species vital for the livelihoods of 2,100 families. Local fishermen, known as “mahageers,” have witnessed a drastic decline in fish productivity, jeopardizing their traditional livelihoods.

Masood-ul-Hassan Balkhi, former dean of the faculty of fisheries at Sher-e-Kashmir University, expresses concern about the potential disruption to the lake’s ecology. LCMA, in collaboration with SKUAST’s Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, is launching an investigation into the appearance of the invasive gar fish.

Authorities are actively searching for the source of the fish and examining whether its presence is an isolated incident, an accident, or an intentional act. The Fisheries Department is treating the matter seriously, conducting a thorough investigation to determine the origins of the alligator gar in Dal Lake.

A newly launched UN data platform, Marine Sand Watch, reveals shocking statistics about the marine dredging industry’s impact, extracting a staggering six billion tons of sand and sediment annually. Developed by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the platform employs artificial intelligence and ship signals to monitor sand, clay, silt, gravel, and rock extraction in marine environments. The data underscores the urgent need for improved management of marine sand resources and a reduction in the environmental impacts of shallow sea mining.

While the platform is groundbreaking, it currently cannot detect artisanal and small-scale mining along shallow coastlines, despite its intensity in some regions. Pascal Peduzzi, Director of GRID-Geneva at UNEP, emphasizes the alarming environmental impacts of shallow sea mining and dredging, including biodiversity loss, water turbidity, and noise effects on marine mammals.

Between four and eight billion tons of sediment are dredged annually from marine and coastal environments, perilously close to the natural replenishment rate needed to sustain coastal and marine ecosystems. The report calls for better management practices, treating sand as a strategic material, and international standards governing marine sand extraction. It also recommends enhanced monitoring, ending sand extraction from beaches, and discouraging mining in active beach-nearshore sand systems. The findings emphasize the global threat to coastal communities and ecosystems, urging swift action to address the crisis.

New Edible Fish Species Discovered in Odisha’s Kolab River

Researchers from the Central University of Odisha and the Zoological Survey of India have identified a new species of freshwater fish in the Kolab river, located in the Koraput district of Odisha. The discovery, named Garra laishrami, was made during an ichthyological survey by Supriya Surachita, a Department of Science & Technology Inspire Fellow.

Surachita’s research, conducted under the supervision of Prof. Sharat Kumar Palita, Dean of the School of Biodiversity and Conservation of Natural Resources at CUO, focuses on the diversity, distribution, and threats to fishes in the freshwater bodies of Koraput in the Eastern Ghats of Odisha.

The newly discovered cyprinid, or freshwater fish, has been named after Dr. Laishram Kosygin of ZSI, in recognition of his contributions to the study of Indian freshwater fishes. The fish category Garra is known for its elongated shape, varying in size from small to medium, and is characterized by the presence of a gular disc. Typically found in regions from Borneo to West Africa, this particular variety, Garra laishrami, is unique to the Kolab river in Odisha’s Eastern Ghats.

The fish, ranging from 76 mm to 95.5 mm in length, has an added significance – it is edible, and local communities in the region consume it. Garra laishrami is usually found beneath rocks and among stones and boulders in torrential streams and rivers.

The discovery highlights the rich biodiversity of the Kolab river, and researchers believe that a more in-depth study of Koraput is essential to uncover various types of organisms in the region. Prof. Palita expressed optimism about the possibility of finding more new fish species in the area.

Details of the study on this new fish species have been published in the taxonomy journal “Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters” in Germany.

Officials report that the initiative, launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, has proven instrumental in tackling rampant malnutrition in the area. A society of displaced individuals was formed, and fish farming, specifically using cage culture, was initiated in abandoned limestone mines at Kamarhatu and Karanjia. The endeavor, spanning 8-10 acres of land, has successfully generated income for the community, providing a sustainable source of livelihood.

District Fishery Officer Jayant Ranjan highlights the dual benefit of fish farming in these mines. It not only creates a livelihood for the local population but also contributes to addressing malnutrition concerns by providing abundant fish for consumption. Boating activities in the mines further contribute to the community’s earnings.

Ranjan expresses the administration’s commitment to expanding the initiative throughout the district, given the abundance of mines in West Singhbhum. Residents are encouraged to form societies to facilitate the implementation of fish farming in their respective areas.

Beneficiaries, mainly original landowners displaced due to mining activities, praise the initiative. Each society, comprising around 50 members, registers with the cooperative society. In one abundant mine, approximately 25 cages yield 2-3 tonnes of fish per season, with two caging seasons annually. The district administration provides comprehensive support for cage culture, enabling individuals to earn around 1.5 lakh per head per annum.

Arjun Mahapatra, a beneficiary, notes that the initiative has not only reduced migration but has also empowered local youth to become self-sufficient through fish farming. Chief Minister Hemant Soren has lauded the effort as a commendable step toward making the region’s youth self-reliant. The success of this project demonstrates the transformative impact of repurposing abandoned mines for sustainable and community-centric initiatives.

Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi, Secretary of the Department of Fisheries, undertook a visit to shrimp farms in Lahli village, Rohtak, and the Regional Centre of ICAR-CIFE, Rohtak, Haryana. Engaging directly with shrimp farmers, Dr. Likhi delved into the grassroots challenges faced by those involved in saline water shrimp farming.

As part of the National Agricultural Higher Education Project (NAHEP) scheme, the Secretary distributed pedigreed common carp seed to selected farmers—an initiative pioneered by ICAR-CIFE. The move is set to bolster the aquaculture sector and enhance the quality of produce.

During discussions, Dr. Likhi underscored the imperative of converting barren land into lucrative aquafarming ventures. Scientists at ICAR-CIFE, during the visit, highlighted the extensive impact of groundwater salinization in inland states, affecting millions of hectares primarily in Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. Proposing aquaculture as a sustainable solution, Dr. Likhi emphasized its economic viability, foreseeing it as a key player in generating income through fish, prawn, and shrimp crops.

Presently, the four north Indian states mentioned produce 8554.15 metric tons annually from 2167 hectares of saline water aquaculture. However, the untapped potential spans 58,000 hectares in these states. Under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), the Department of Fisheries has approved a substantial project for the Genetic Improvement of Common Carp in Inland Saline Aquaculture, with an investment of Rs. 9.29 Crore.

Commending ICAR-CIFE for its commendable genetic improvement program, Dr. Likhi reviewed various activities undertaken by the institution. The Centre’s breakthrough technology, fortifying deficient ions in inland saline water, has been extended to thousands of acres across Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, contributing to a significant increase in production areas.

Expressing congratulations for this technological breakthrough, Dr. Likhi urged for greater awareness and widespread adoption of the technology in the four states boasting suitable acreage for saline water aquaculture. This strategic initiative aligns with the Government of India’s commitment to harnessing the full potential of 58,000 hectares, with the ultimate goal of doubling the income of fish farmers. The plan aims to revolutionize aquaculture practices, breathing new life into saline areas, turning them into thriving hubs of sustainable fish and shrimp farming.

A team of researchers has explored the promising role of aquatic creatures, including worms, non-biting midge larvae, and mussels, in enhancing the efficiency of wastewater treatment plants. Investigating their ability to degrade sludge, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and eliminate excess nutrients, the study reveals a potential natural solution for the challenges faced by wastewater treatment facilities.

In conventional wastewater treatment processes, excess sludge is a notable byproduct, posing economic challenges due to the high cost of processing. However, the research, part of the Aquafarm project, demonstrates that invertebrates thriving in streams and ditches can play a pivotal role in breaking down this sludge, primarily composed of organic material.

Tom van der Meer, a researcher at Wageningen Environmental Research and a participant in the Aquafarm project, conducted a Ph.D. study to analyze the efficiency of various aquatic species in consuming excess sludge. The non-biting midge larvae emerged as particularly effective, accelerating sludge degradation up to five times compared to sludge without them. The introduction of different species further improved sludge degradation, and their burrowing activities introduced oxygen, mitigating the formation of the potent greenhouse gas methane.

The European Union’s Water Framework Directive mandates the improvement of water quality in member states by 2027. To achieve this, the directive emphasizes the reduction of nutrient levels, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, in surface water. Aquatic invertebrates, as highlighted in the research, can contribute to this goal by addressing excess nutrients and preventing the growth of harmful cyanobacteria.

Additionally, the study explored the combined efforts of algae, mussels, and floating plants like duckweed ferns in removing nutrients from water after the wastewater treatment process. The promising results suggest a nature-based approach for further enhancing water quality.

In a practical application of the findings, two Dutch water authorities are set to develop a pilot treatment facility capable of purifying approximately 75 cubic meters of wastewater per day. This marks a step toward implementing natural, cost-efficient solutions that could significantly contribute to improving water quality in Dutch nature.

Van der Meer envisions a future where sewage plants widely adopt these nature-based solutions, potentially revolutionizing wastewater purification processes in the next decade.

National Green Tribunal (NGT), the aquaculture industry in India is set to face enhanced regulatory oversight with the application of Environment Impact Assessment Notification and inclusion under the consent regime of the Water Act. The NGT’s ruling, dated February 27, stems from an execution application filed by Mumbai-based NGO Vanashakti, which had previously secured an order in May 2021, prompting the formation of a committee to assess the sustainability of inland aquaculture practices.

The NGT has mandated comprehensive regulation, urging authorities to enforce environmental safeguards and scrutinize the impact of aquaculture on water bodies. The ruling emphasizes the need to align inland aquaculture practices with the Environment Impact Assessment regime.

Vanashakti, the NGO behind the legal efforts, underscored the lack of a policy in Maharashtra to regulate inland aquaculture, calling attention to the absence of provisions assessing environmental impacts before granting licenses. The expert committee formed by NGT found tangible evidence of environmental impact in Vadivale Lake, including elevated pollution levels attributed to cage aquaculture activities.

The NGT’s ruling directs the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to bring cage aquaculture under the consent regime within three months. Additionally, the NGT instructs the MPCB to take swift action against individuals contributing to pollution from such activities.

Stalin D, director of Vanashakti, praised the judgment, emphasizing the importance of adapting environmental laws to address emerging sources of pollution. Aquaculture, promoted for enhancing food security and livelihoods, will now undergo increased monitoring, reflecting the evolving landscape of environmental regulations in the country.

Controversy Surrounds Plans for World’s First Octopus Farm Amid Welfare Concerns

Scientists are expressing deep concerns over the well-being of highly intelligent octopuses in the wake of plans to establish the world’s first Octopus farm. Confidential documents, obtained by a media outlet, have revealed that the proposed farm, situated in Spain’s Canary Islands, aims to rear approximately one million octopuses annually for human consumption.

One of the main points of contention revolves around the proposed method of slaughtering these creatures in icy water, which some scientists deem as cruel. The company spearheading this initiative, Spanish multinational Nueva Pescanova, vehemently denies that the octopuses will endure any form of suffering. The campaign group Eurogroup for Animals has shared the confidential planning proposal documents with the public and the Canary Islands’ General Directorate of Fishing, the entity to which Nueva Pescanova submitted the proposal, has yet to issue a response.

Octopuses are commonly captured in the wild using various methods, including pots, lines, and traps, and are a popular food source in several regions, including the Mediterranean, Asia, and Latin America. Nevertheless, breeding them in captivity has proven to be a formidable challenge, primarily due to the need for live food for the octopus larvae and a meticulously controlled environment. In 2019, Nueva Pescanova claimed to have made a significant scientific breakthrough in this regard.

The proposed intensive farming of octopuses has already sparked opposition, with lawmakers in Washington State, USA, proposing a ban on the practice. Nueva Pescanova’s plans entail housing these usually solitary creatures in communal tanks alongside other octopuses, often subjecting them to continuous light. This would occur within a two-story building featuring approximately 1,000 tanks located at Las Palmas port in Gran Canaria. The octopuses would be euthanized by placing them in containers of water kept at a temperature of -3°C, as detailed in the documents.

Nueva Pescanova intends to produce 3,000 tonnes of octopus annually to cater to premium international markets, including the United States, South Korea, and Japan. According to Compassion in World Farming (CiWF), a campaign group that has scrutinized the plans, this would translate to roughly one million animals, with each cubic meter of tank accommodating 10-15 octopuses.
