The quest to optimize feeding practices for Indian Major Carps (IMC) takes centre stage, driven by scientific inquiry and innovation. IMCs, renowned for their omnivorous dietary preferences, demand a meticulous approach towards feed formulation to ensure optimal growth and nutritional value.

Recent scientific investigations delve deeply into the intricate facets of feed management for IMCs, illuminating the pivotal role of feed ingredients in shaping the quality, safety, and nutrient content of farmed fish. This research underscores the importance of selecting aquafeed ingredients based on three critical factors: quality, quantity, and cost-effectiveness. It emphasizes the necessity of creating nutrient-rich compositions while mitigating the presence of anti-nutrients or contaminants that could hinder nutrient absorption.

In the diverse aquaculture landscapes of South Asia, feeding strategies for IMCs are delineated into three distinct categories. Firstly, intensive culture systems predominantly utilize industrially produced pelleted feed to optimize feed efficiency and production yields. Secondly, semi-intensive culture systems employ a hybrid approach, combining industrial and farm-made feed mixtures to achieve a balance between cost-effectiveness and nutritional adequacy. Lastly, traditional or extensive culture systems rely solely on farm-made feeds, comprising locally available ingredients tailored to meet the nutritional needs of fish.

Farmers play a pivotal role in crafting farm-made feeds, leveraging locally available resources to formulate nutritionally balanced diets for IMCs. Primary protein sources such as mustard oil cake, groundnut oil cake, and soybean meal are supplemented by energy-rich cereals like rice bran, maize, and wheat. Non-conventional feed ingredients such as meat meal and poultry by-products further augment the dietary spectrum, ensuring a comprehensive nutritional profile.

Supplementary feeding practices complement farm-made feeds, addressing specific nutritional requirements and maximizing growth potential. The integration of omega-3 enriched ingredients underscores a commitment to enhancing fish quality and sustainability, driving innovation and experimentation in feed formulations.

Moreover, farm-made feeds emerge as a cost-effective and resource-efficient solution, particularly beneficial for aquaculture start-ups. By harnessing locally available resources and creating employment opportunities, farm-made feeds exemplify a holistic approach to sustainable aquaculture development.

Himachal Pradesh Plans 15 RAS Ponds to Boost Fish Production by 2025

Himachal Pradesh, a northern Indian state, is set to establish 15 land-based fish ponds utilizing recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) technology by 2025. The initiative is part of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) scheme, introduced by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in 2020.

As per reports from The Times of India, five ponds will be constructed in normal-water areas across Una, Mandi, and Surmaur districts, with an anticipated annual production of 40 metric tons (MT) each. The first two facilities are slated for construction in the current financial year. Additionally, 10 ponds will be established in cold-water regions spanning Kinnaur, Sirmaur, Shimla, Mandi, Chamba, and Kullu districts over the next five years, aiming for an annual output ranging from 4 MT to 10 MT per pond.

Himachal Pradesh’s fisheries department, projects a cumulative production of approximately 270 MT of fish per year from these 15 ponds upon full operation. Rainbow trout will be cultivated in the cold-water ponds, while pangasius, tilapia, and common carp will be farmed in normal-water areas.

Farmers involved in the initiative will receive training sessions hosted by the National Fisheries Development Board, focusing on best practices for cold-water aquaculture employing RAS technology. The state government intends to encourage private sector participation by offering financial assistance for construction expenses.

Implementing RAS technology is expected to empower local fish farmers by enabling year-round operations, particularly during water scarcity in summer months. Moreover, the technology ensures consistent fish growth unaffected by weather conditions, thereby promising a stable income source for farmers, according to the newspaper report.

In the Indian context, aquaponics initiatives often receive support from Self-Help Groups (SHGs), fisherman societies, and local fish farmers, reflecting a growing awareness and interest in sustainable farming practices.

Aquaponics holds immense potential to transform India’s agricultural landscape, offering a resilient and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional farming methods. The fisheries department in Bhagalpur district has initiated a campaign aimed at raising awareness among the farming community about the benefits of fish farming (pisciculture) in lowland and wasteland areas under the innovative Mukhyamantri Integrated Chaur Vikas Yojana (MICVY).

Officials revealed plans to allocate over 1000 hectares of land in Bhagalpur district for fish farming under the MICVY initiative. This strategic endeavour not only seeks to generate additional employment opportunities for farmers but also aims at conserving groundwater resources while enhancing the region’s biodiversity by attracting migratory birds through the creation of supplementary water reservoirs.

Krishna Kanhaiya, the District Fisheries Officer (DFO), outlined the objectives of MICVY, emphasizing its focus on establishing ponds and water bodies in lowland or wasteland areas for fish cultivation. In addition to fish farming, the initiative will enable farmers to engage in horticulture, agro-forestry, integrated plantations, and other related activities, thereby fostering positive socio-economic changes within the farming community.

According to the DFO, eligible farmers are required to submit their applications to the fisheries department along with relevant details for the development of ponds on their lowland or wasteland areas. The state government is poised to provide subsidies for pond construction, as well as additional financial support for horticultural, agro-forestry, and related endeavours undertaken by beneficiary farmers on their lands.

The historic trout farm and hatchery located at Avalanche in Udhagamandalam, which suffered significant damage in a massive landslide back in 2019, has been granted Rs. 2.5 crore from the Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure and Development Fund by the Union government for renovation purposes.

Established 115 years ago by renowned pisciculture expert Henry Charlton Wilson in 1907, this farm holds a distinguished legacy in the field. It is noted as the site where the first batch of eyed ova of trout was successfully hatched after being brought from New Zealand.

Preceding Wilson’s endeavour, fisheries researcher Francis Day attempted to introduce rainbow trout to India in 1863, but his efforts were unsuccessful. The farm, known as the Government Wilson Trout Farm, specializes in rearing trout fry, fingerlings, advanced fingerlings, and brooders. Recently, 20,000 trout from Kokernag in Kashmir were introduced to the farm.

The renovation project, expected to be completed by October, is overseen by M. Kathiresan, the assistant director of the fisheries department responsible for the farm. Kathiresan highlighted the significance of maintaining optimal temperatures ranging between 5 and 15 degrees Celsius for the survival of trout. He noted that the current breeding season of rainbow trout will facilitate the harvesting of trout seeds, which will then be nurtured upstream.

Trout species play a vital ecological role in the upper reaches of streams throughout the district, contributing to the preservation of ecological parameters, Kathiresan emphasized.

West Bengal has achieved self-reliance in Rohu-Katla farming, reducing its dependency on imports from states like Andhra Pradesh. Termed the ‘Moyna Model,’ this initiative has revolutionized the fisheries sector in the state, resulting in a surge in domestic production and meeting the local market demands.

According to data from the Fisheries Department, the import of big Rohu and Katla fishes from Andhra Pradesh has plummeted from 80 thousand metric tons to just 40 thousand metric tons in recent years. This dramatic reduction underscores the success of the ‘Moyna Model’ in promoting indigenous fish farming.

More than 1 lakh farmers have embraced the ‘Moyna Model,’ utilizing fallow lands to cultivate Rui, Katla, Mrigel, and other large fishes. Dr. Amal Dhar, a prominent fishery scientist, highlights the model’s effectiveness in utilizing unsuitable lands for cultivation while meeting the growing demand for protein-rich fishes, especially amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the Moyna block, the epicentre of this transformative initiative, farmers cultivate approximately 6 tons of fish per hectare annually. These fishes are not only supplied to various parts of the state but also exported to states like Bihar, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh. Each bheri, covering an area of 200 to 450 acres, is meticulously managed, with farmers constructing small embankments to prevent floodwater intrusion and ensure uninterrupted fish production.

The success of the ‘Moyna Model’ has translated into tangible benefits for the people of West Bengal, who now enjoy fresh and locally sourced fish, eliminating the need for imported ‘chalani maachh’ that often takes weeks to reach the market. Moreover, the prices of locally cultivated fishes are relatively lower, alleviating the financial burden on consumers exacerbated by escalating transportation costs.

Statistics from the Fisheries Department underscore the remarkable growth of the fisheries sector, with fish production surging from 17.82 lakh metric tons in 2019-20 to 18.43 lakh metric tons in 2021-22. This exponential growth reflects the transformative impact of the ‘Moyna Model’ in bolstering the state’s self-sufficiency in fish production and ensuring food security for its residents.

The scientists at WorldFish have successfully induced the breeding of mola, a small indigenous fish rich in essential micronutrients, for the first time in India. This achievement, realized at the partner hatchery, Biswal Aquatech in Odisha, marks a significant milestone in addressing malnutrition, particularly in low-income communities where deficiencies are prevalent.

Traditionally, farming species like mola on a large scale posed technological challenges due to their delicate nature. However, through innovative techniques, such as designing breeding tanks with oxygen-rich water from an aeration tower, WorldFish scientists have standardized the breeding protocol for mola, facilitating mass production with minimal risk of disease spread.

The project has already yielded impressive results, with over 7 million mola hatchlings produced and distributed to farmers, primarily for household consumption and sale. Notably, efforts have been made to empower women through initiatives like Mission Shakti, where approximately 15,000 fry were provided to women’s self-help groups for stocking in publicly owned tanks.

This success was further celebrated through a mola seed release program in collaboration with the Odisha Directorate of Fisheries, aimed at spreading awareness and providing guidance on mola seed production and farming.

The success story of mola breeding has already been replicated and scaled in Assam, showcasing the potential for scientific innovation to address malnutrition and improve food security in India.

Sundargarh District Witnesses Surge in Fish Production Despite Limited Water Resources

Rourkela: Despite facing constraints in water resources, the tribal-dominated Sundargarh district has made significant strides in fish production through the adoption of modern fishing techniques. In recent years, the district has seen a notable increase in fish production, signalling a positive trend in the local aquaculture industry.

With an annual procurement of approximately 3,700 tonnes of fish from various states for consumption, Sundargarh district has demonstrated remarkable progress by producing around 20,800 tonnes of fish in the fiscal year 2022-23. Encouraged by this upward trajectory, the district aims to achieve self-sufficiency in fish production within the next five years.

According to Sundargarh district fisheries officer Arun Kumar Sahoo, the rise in fish production can be attributed to the concerted efforts of the Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Department in promoting modern fish farming techniques among villagers. The department has been actively encouraging the adoption of pisciculture in open water bodies and facilitating initiatives such as cage culture and biofloc fish farming.

One noteworthy initiative involves empowering a women’s self-help group (WSHG) in Kuanrmunda block to practice cage culture at the Mandira dam of the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) in Rajgangpur block. Additionally, fresh work orders have been issued to 28 WSHGs and 19 individuals to establish biofloc fish farming units, further bolstering local fish production efforts.

Traditionally, inland fisheries in the district were limited, with fishing activities primarily undertaken by economically weaker sections for subsistence and local trade. However, the engagement of farmers in pisciculture has led to significant improvements in freshwater production over the years.

Given the seasonal variability and low water holding capacity of rivers, fish production in Sundargarh district is predominantly carried out in farm ponds, biofloc units, shallow waters of rivers, and irrigation dams. Presently, fish farming activities are underway in 4,500 private tanks, 2,284 gram panchayat tanks, and 10 revenue ponds, along with individual fishing in rivers.

The district also benefits from the participation of nine primary cooperative fishermen societies and 448 WSHGs involved in fish farming activities. Furthermore, 84 biofloc fish farming units contribute to the overall fish production landscape.

While government fish farms in Sadar and Bisra blocks play a crucial role in supplying spawns and fry for seasonal breeding, the government fish farm in Bonai is currently undergoing renovation. The district, with its vast potential, aims to further enhance its fish production capacity in collaboration with individual fishermen and community-based initiatives.
