  5. Awareness Campaigns: Educating locals and tourists on the harmful effects of overfeeding fish and polluting the lake, with religious leaders playing a pivotal role.
  6. Regular Monitoring: Conducting scientific studies and predictive modelling to anticipate and mitigate future incidents.

A recent report reveals that nearly 20% of species in UNESCO World Heritage marine sites are under severe heat stress, posing a significant threat to their survival and disrupting marine ecosystems.

Heat Tolerance and Vulnerable Species

The study highlights that 881 out of 4,406 marine species have reached or surpassed their heat tolerance levels. Among these are 342 fish species, 135 types of algae, and various marine mammals, including iconic species like the Caribbean reef shark and the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin.

The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve tops the list, with 53% of its species living at their heat tolerance limits. Coiba National Park in Panama follows with 26.6%, and the Everglades National Park in the USA records 24.4%. Even the Sundarbans, a vital marine ecosystem, reports nearly 20% of its species struggling with excessively warm waters.

Impacts of Rising Temperatures

Oceans have warmed by approximately 1°C since 1884, and predictions suggest an alarming increase of up to 4.4°C by the century’s end if emissions are not curbed. This rise in temperature:

  • Increases vulnerability to diseases.
  • Disrupts oxygen and nutrient circulation, affecting marine health.

The cascading effects could lead to mass migration of species, destabilizing marine ecosystems globally.

To combat these challenges, experts emphasize the need for immediate greenhouse gas reductions. Community engagement and sustainable practices are crucial to protect marine biodiversity. UNESCO World Heritage Marine Sites, like the Belize Barrier Reef and Coiba National Park, must be prioritized for conservation to safeguard their ecological and cultural significance.

In a significant step toward sustainable aquaculture practices, the ICAR-Central Institute of Brackish water Aquaculture (CIBA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BRC Marine Products, a leading seafood processing and export firm based in Dhamana, Bhadrak district, Odisha. The partnership focuses on evaluating the feasibility of rice distillers’ dried grains with solubles (DDGS) as a sustainable dietary component for Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei).

The agreement underscores the shared commitment of ICAR-CIBA and BRC Marine Products to explore innovative and cost-effective protein alternatives in shrimp feed formulation.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Kuldeep Kumar Lal, Director of ICAR-CIBA, emphasized the urgent need for alternative protein sources to ensure sustainability and cost efficiency in aquaculture. “This collaboration will pave the way for identifying viable resources to replace traditional ingredients, reducing the environmental footprint of aqua feeds,” he stated.

Shri S.N. Yadav, representing BRC Marine Products, elaborated on the company’s initiatives in aquaculture, marine product processing, and bio-ethanol production. He highlighted rice DDGS as a promising substitute for soybean meal, which has the potential to revolutionize the Indian aqua feed industry by offering an economical and sustainable option.

The partnership is expected to enhance the nutritional quality and sustainability of shrimp feeds, contributing significantly to the growth of India’s aquaculture sector.

Dr. Eldho Varghese, Senior Scientist, has been elected as a NAAS Fellow, while Dr. Sumithra TG, Scientist, has been named a NAAS Associate. These recognitions were awarded in acknowledgment of their groundbreaking contributions to agricultural research.

Established in 1990, the NAAS is a leading body fostering agricultural sciences across disciplines such as fisheries, animal husbandry, and agro-industry. Through recognitions like these, the Academy emphasizes cutting-edge research and policy development to address critical challenges in agriculture and allied fields.

ANDHRA PRADESH TO REPLICATE KERALA’S ARTIFICIAL REEF MODEL FOR MARINE CONSERVATION

In a landmark move to bolster marine biodiversity and promote sustainable fisheries, the Andhra Pradesh government has partnered with the Kerala State Coastal Area Development Corporation (KSCADC) to adopt Kerala’s successful artificial reef model.

On Tuesday, 24 December, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by T Dola Shankar, Director of Andhra Pradesh Fisheries Department; PI Sheikh Pareeth, Managing Director of KSCADC; and Dr. Joe Kizhakkudan, Principal Scientist at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI).

24 Artificial Reefs to be Deployed

Under the initiative, reinforced cement concrete (RCC) artificial reef modules will be installed at 24 strategic locations along Andhra Pradesh’s coastline. These locations have been approved by the Central Government under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).

The project aims to:

  • Restore marine biodiversity.
  • Enhance fish habitats.
  • Improve the livelihoods of local fishing communities.

Kerala’s Success as a Blueprint

Officials highlighted Kerala’s successful deployment of artificial reef habitats as the inspiration for this collaboration. The Kerala initiative, which installed RCC reef modules in 42 fishing villages in Thiruvananthapuram district, led to significant improvements in fish breeding and environmental sustainability.

Expert Guidance for Implementation

With technical support from KSCADC and CMFRI, Andhra Pradesh is set to replicate this success. CMFRI will oversee the installation process, ensuring the reefs are effectively positioned to maximize ecological benefits.

This joint initiative is expected to transform marine ecosystems along the Andhra Pradesh coast, benefiting both marine life and the fishing community, while setting a benchmark for sustainable fisheries management in India.

However, a group of individuals from Yanam, a Union Territory, has caught everyone’s attention by adopting a unique approach—using plastic bottles to catch fish! This innovative idea has left people amazed and curious.

Locals in Yanam have developed a new baiting technique that involves a simple plastic bottle and wheat flour dough. According to the fishermen, this method is so effective that it helps them catch fish weighing up to 2 kilograms.

How Does It Work?

The process is surprisingly straightforward yet efficient. A plastic bottle is modified by cutting off its top portion. Inside the bottle, a lump of wheat flour dough is placed as bait. The bottle is then submerged in the river. Attracted by the scent of the dough, fish swim into the bottle to feed, only to get trapped inside as they cannot swim back out. After a short while, the bottle is pulled out of the water, and the trapped fish are collected.

This method has gained immense popularity among local youths, particularly near the GMC Balayogi Varadi on the banks of the Godavari River, where groups can be seen engrossed in this unique fishing activity.

The fishermen claim that this method is not only easy but also highly effective, catching the attention of many who visit the region. With minimal resources required, this ingenious approach could revolutionize small-scale fishing practices in other parts of the country as well.

As the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention, and the people of Yanam have proven it once again with their simple yet creative solution to catching fish.

In a concerning environmental incident, thousands of fish were discovered dead in the Mula-Mutha River near the Naik Bet area in Pune. The deaths are believed to have been caused by chemical-contaminated water entering the river, raising alarms about pollution levels and public health risks.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has launched an investigation to identify the source of the contamination. Initial suspicions point to untreated sewage and industrial effluents as contributing factors. The Mula and Mutha Rivers, which meet at Sangamwadi, have long been plagued by pollution. Pune generates around 900 million liters of sewage daily, but only half of it undergoes treatment, with the rest flowing untreated into the rivers. The situation is further aggravated by the discharge of untreated industrial wastewater from the Pimpri-Chinchwad area into the Mula River, making its waters toxic for aquatic life.

Residents near Naik Bet reported a foul smell and noticed heaps of dead fish in the river. The incident has prompted scrutiny of the nearby Naidu Sewage Treatment Plant, but initial findings indicate no untreated water was released from the facility. The Sewerage Department is also inspecting potential leaks or damage in sewage pipelines.

Water samples have been collected for laboratory testing, and results are expected within two to three days. Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B.P. assured that action would be taken based on the findings, stating, “We are determined to identify the cause and ensure necessary steps are implemented to prevent such occurrences in the future.”

The incident has sparked renewed calls for stricter pollution control measures and improved wastewater management to protect the river ecosystem and public health.

In a decisive action against illegal wildlife trafficking, the Rachakonda police apprehended two individuals involved in smuggling protected marine species. The suspects, identified as Mohd Siraj Ahmed (39) from Old Malakpet and Shaik Jani (50) from Medipally, were caught at Medipally on Wednesday. The operation led to the seizure of 281 starfish and 160 red-eared slider tortoises, which were being transported from Andhra Pradesh.

Investigations revealed that the accused had a well-planned network to source and distribute the marine species. The duo procured the wildlife from Vijay Kumar, a resident of Andhra Pradesh, at a lower price and transported them secretly to Hyderabad. Once in the city, they stored the animals in undisclosed locations, away from public scrutiny. Ahmed and Jani, both aquaculturists with shops in Hyderabad, sold the starfish and tortoises exclusively to select customers at exorbitant rates, generating substantial illegal profits.

“Ahmed and Jani were using their aquaculture businesses as a cover for smuggling these protected species. They would keep the wildlife hidden and trade only with trusted clients to avoid detection. Acting on credible information, our team conducted a raid and seized the animals,” explained Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Operations Team), A Ramana Reddy.

The confiscated wildlife, along with the accused, was handed over to the Forest Department for further action. Authorities have registered a case under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, which prohibits the trade and transport of protected species. Violators of the Act face stringent penalties, including imprisonment and hefty fines.

The red-eared slider tortoise, an invasive species, and starfish play vital roles in their ecosystems. Their illegal capture and trade not only violate conservation laws but also disrupt ecological balance. This operation underscores the need for stricter enforcement and public awareness about the importance of protecting wildlife.

The Rachakonda police and Forest Department have vowed to continue their efforts to dismantle such illegal trade networks and ensure that those involved are brought to justice. The public has been urged to report any suspicious activities related to wildlife to aid in conservation efforts.

This crackdown serves as a reminder of the pressing need to safeguard wildlife and uphold the laws designed to protect India’s rich biodiversity.

ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIFA) commemorated Kisan Saman Diwas, also known as National Farmer’s Day, on December 23, 2024, at Barijanga village in the Balianta block of Khordha district, Odisha. The event, held in honor of the birth anniversary of India’s fifth Prime Minister, Chaudhary Charan Singh, brought together approximately 150 farmers, including 110 women, demonstrating the institute’s commitment to empowering rural communities.

This celebration formed part of ICAR-CIFA’s ongoing Swachhata Pakhwada campaign, observed from December 16 to 31. Organized in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Khordha, the event featured active participation from scientists like Dr. G. S. Saha, Dr. U. L. Mohanty, Mr. S. Singh, and Mrs. H. Banu. The experts addressed challenges in fish farming, advocating organic farming practices across agriculture, horticulture, and aquaculture. Women farmers were especially encouraged to engage in innovative practices such as biofloc-based fish farming.

A key highlight was the felicitation of six progressive farmers for their significant contributions to aquaculture and agriculture. The honored farmers included:

  • Mr. Prasanna Kumar Swain from Taraboi
  • Mr. Siddharth Kumar Behera and Mr. Khirod Dalei from Barijanga
  • Mr. Bikramsen Nayak from Purohitpur
  • Mr. Arttatrana Khatoi from Siddhakutila
  • Mr. Mohan Kumar Parida from Bramhankhandi

Mr. Bikramsen Nayak, one of the awardees, shared his inspiring journey, motivating fellow farmers to actively adopt sustainable agricultural practices. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Singh, who acknowledged the contributions of all participants.

The program was lauded as a transformative initiative, offering practical insights and sustainable solutions to enhance aquaculture and agriculture practices in the region.
