Tripura is striving to achieve self-sufficiency in fish production to meet the high local demand, according to Minister of Fisheries Sudhangshu Das. With 95% of Tripura’s population consuming fish, the state requires 1.15 lakh metric tonnes of fish annually. However, current production falls short, prompting efforts to increase output and reduce dependency on imports.

Minister Das, during a state-level review meeting at the Department of Fisheries in Agartala, emphasized the strategic use of allocated funds and the involvement of local unemployed youths to enhance fish production. He acknowledged that past challenges in utilizing the budget effectively have hindered achieving the desired outcomes. New targets have been set to address these issues, focusing on leveraging local resources and labor.

Involving unemployed youths in fish cultivation and related industries is a key strategy to boost production. This initiative aims to make Tripura self-sufficient in fish production, reducing the state’s reliance on imports from Bangladesh and other Indian states. Minister Das highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts and time-bound actions to overcome obstacles and increase local fish production.

Earlier this year, Das reiterated the state’s annual requirement of 1.15 lakh metric tonnes of fish for its fish-consuming population. Currently, Tripura produces 85,000 metric tonnes, necessitating the import of 30,000 metric tonnes. To further support this initiative, the state government announced the establishment of the first Integrated Aqua Park in Unakoti district, funded under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana. The Government of India has sanctioned Rs 42.39 crore for the first phase of the project in Kailashahar, Unakoti district.

Despite previous targets set by the state for food self-sufficiency not being met, the current government is determined to overcome these challenges. Efforts are being made to double farmers’ incomes through intensive cultivation and the introduction of high-yielding varieties, with a focus on boosting primary sector activities to enhance revenue and mitigate the impacts of the pandemic-induced lockdown.

In a significant reshuffling of the Bihar state government, Rajeev Ranjan, popularly known as Lalan Singh, has been appointed to two crucial ministries in the Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal (United) administration. Singh will now head the Ministry of Panchayati Raj as well as the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying. The Department of Fisheries in Himachal Pradesh has signed an important agreement with the Central Freshwater Aquaculture Research in Bhubaneswar. This new partnership is set to help local fish farmers by providing them with advanced fish feed and high-quality seeds for Jayanti Rohu and improved Katla fish.

With this new technology and better fish seeds, fish in Himachal Pradesh can grow up to 20% faster. This means farmers could earn more money from their fish farms.

Director of Fisheries, Vivek Chandel, expressed optimism about the agreement, expecting it to significantly improve the income of fish farmers.

Recently, a workshop in Bilaspur also highlighted the benefits of these new fish varieties and the importance of good fish diets. Scientists shared valuable information about how these improvements can enhance fish growth and quality.

Women farmers in Moothakunnam and Kottappuram have successfully harvested a significant yield of green mussels, totaling 2.5 tonnes, under the expert guidance of the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI). The initiative, spearheaded by the Kudumbashree units, resulted in 1.5 tonnes harvested from Moothakunnam and 1 tonne from Kottappuram.

The green mussel farming project began in December last year, with CMFRI scientists providing essential guidance and support. After harvesting, the mussels underwent a depuration process—a scientific method of purging contaminants from the gills and gut by using purified seawater—ensuring the mussels are safe for consumption.

The depurated mussel meat is now available for purchase at the CMFRI. Interested buyers can visit the Agriculture Technology Information Centre (ATIC) from 10 AM to 4 PM on all working days, while stocks last. The mussel meat is priced at Rs. 250 for a 250-gram packet.

This successful harvest highlights the potential for sustainable aquaculture practices and the positive impact of scientific guidance on local farming communities.

The National Agricultural Science Complex in New Delhi hosted the launch workshop of the All-India Network Project on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in Fisheries and Livestock. The event marked a significant step towards combating AMR in farmed animals and fishes across the country.

The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). The event also saw the participation of prominent figures in the field, including Dr. J. K. Jena, Deputy Director General (Fisheries Science) at ICAR and National Coordinator of AINP-AMR, Dr. Ashok Kumar, Assistant Director General (Animal Health) at ICAR, Dr. Uttam Kumar Sarkar, Director of the ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR), Lucknow, and Co-coordinator of AINP-AMR.

The workshop’s agenda includes reviewing the progress of the project, expanding the network, developing an operational framework, and outlining a future surveillance roadmap for AMR in farmed animals and fishes. The initiative is supported by 31 partners from ICAR Fisheries and Animal Science institutes, as well as Central Agricultural Universities and State Agricultural Universities across India. The ICAR-NBFGR in Lucknow will coordinate the project.

This collaborative effort underscores the commitment to address the pressing issue of antimicrobial resistance, ensuring sustainable and healthy livestock and fisheries sectors in India.

A team of 15 newly appointed Assistant Commissioners of Fisheries from the Department of Fisheries, Government of Maharashtra, visited the ICAR – Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) in Cochin. This visit was part of a comprehensive training program running from 27th May to 31st May 2024, which also included tours of CMFRI, CIFNET, and MPEDA.

The training, organized by the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC), aims to enhance the technical knowledge of these recently recruited officers. The Director of ICAR-CIFT welcomed the team and provided an overview of the institute’s diverse activities and contributions to the fisheries sector. During their visit, the Assistant Commissioners toured the CIFT headquarters, exploring various Divisions, Sections, and laboratories. They engaged in detailed discussions with scientists from each Division, gaining valuable insights into the ongoing research and development activities.

This educational visit was designed to update the technical knowledge of the officers, which is crucial for their new roles overseeing fisheries across different districts in Maharashtra. Key areas for potential interaction in Maharashtra’s marine and inland fisheries sectors were identified, including responsible fishing systems, value addition, waste utilization, and quality assurance. This initiative underscores the commitment to equipping fisheries officials with the latest knowledge and skills to enhance the sector’s sustainability and efficiency.

In a significant stride towards environmental conservation, World Environment Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm in collaboration with the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) Kolkata Chapter. This year’s event focused on the critical need to preserve and rejuvenate the River Ganga, a lifeline for millions in India.

As part of the “Namami Gange” programme, a substantial river ranching initiative was undertaken. A total of 3 lakh Indian Major Carp (IMC) and 22,000 indigenous Olive Barb fish were released into the River Ganga. This effort is aimed at boosting the river’s biodiversity, ensuring the sustainability of its ecosystem, and supporting the livelihoods of communities dependent on these aquatic resources.

The event was graced by the presence of Dr. Uttam Kumar Mandal, Principal Scientist at the Central Soil Salinity Research Institute (CSSRI), Canning Town. Dr. Mandal delivered an enlightening lecture, emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices in river conservation. He highlighted the success stories of the “Namami Gange” programme and stressed the need for continued community involvement and scientific intervention to restore the river’s health.

The collaborative effort underscores the commitment of NAAS and other participating organizations to environmental stewardship. By integrating scientific expertise with grassroots action, the programme aims to create a lasting positive impact on the River Ganga, ensuring it remains a vital resource for future generations.
