CMFRI Initiates Mega Seaweed Cultivation Mission Along Andhra Pradesh Coast

Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has launched an extensive initiative to cultivate seaweed along the coastal belt of Andhra Pradesh (AP). Traditionally popular in South East Asian cuisine, seaweed is now gaining popularity among residents of AP and other parts of India.

Acknowledging the rising local demand and the pharmaceutical industry’s interest in certain seaweed types, authorities are expanding cultivation efforts. The Central government is actively promoting seaweed cultivation by providing subsidies, particularly to fisherfolk, utilizing methods such as rafts or tube-net.

A pilot project is underway at Mangamaripeta coast, near Bheemili beach, where local fisherfolk are involved in a 30-day seaweed cultivation in nets. The CMFRI scientists have identified 27 potential sites in four undivided north coastal districts, and cultivation will span 49 locations covering more than 1,200 hectares.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), the Central government has supported the establishment of approximately 10,000 seaweed culture units in AP, including 2,700 units in the Visakhapatnam and Anakapalli districts.

Seaweed, a versatile marine plant, finds applications in food, pharmaceuticals, textiles, fertilizers, cattle feed, and the biofuel industry. The most commonly cultivated species include Kappaphycus alvarezii, gracilaria, saccharina japonica, pyropia, and sargassum fusiform.

Project Manager P. Krishna, overseeing the PMMSY, stated that seaweed cultivation would employ methods such as raft cultivation using high-density polyvinyl pipes or the tube-net method. Training programs for farmers will be provided by CMFRI and PMMSY. The pilot project at Mangamaripeta beach involves 10 rafts, with an expected yield in 50 days.

Puducherry: Union Minister of Fisheries, Parshottam Rupala, emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by fishermen nationwide during a visit to the Thengaithittu fishing harbour in Puducherry on Sunday.

As part of the Sagar Parikrama Yatra, Minister Rupala toured coastal areas on both the east and west coasts to assess the progress of various Central schemes and engage with fishermen to better understand their issues and experiences.

Highlighting the significance of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), Mr. Rupala urged fishermen, women self-help group members, cooperative societies, and entrepreneurs to take advantage of the benefits offered under this scheme.

During his visit to the Cuddalore fishing harbour, the Minister interacted with local fishermen, accompanied by L. Murugan, Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, along with senior officials from the Fisheries Department.

The presence of Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy and Lieutenant Governor Tamilasai Soundararajan underscored the significance of the government’s commitment to addressing the concerns of the fishing community. Minister Rupala’s coastal tour serves as a proactive approach to ensure the effective implementation of policies and schemes aimed at benefiting fishermen across the nation.

Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Shri Parshottam Rupala, along with Minister of State Dr. L. Murugan, is all set to inaugurate Sagar Parikrama Phase-IX today, at Thondi in the Ramnad District of Tamil Nadu. The launch will mark the beginning of an extensive journey covering eight coastal districts in Tamil Nadu, including Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Viluppuram, Chengalpattu, Chennai, and extending to Karaikal and Puducherry.

The primary focus of Sagar Parikrama Phase IX is to establish direct engagement with the fishing communities. Politicians will have interactive sessions with fishermen, facilitating the distribution of certificates and sanctions related to key schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), Kisan Credit Card (KCC), Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF), and State Schemes.

Highlight events during the Parikrama include stage events at Nagapattinam Fishing Harbour (October 7), Poompuhar Fishing Harbour (October 8), and Cuddalore Fishing Harbour (October 8). The dissemination of literature on various schemes, including PMMSY, State schemes, e-shram, FIDF, and KCC, is planned to enhance awareness among the beneficiaries.

Sagar Parikrama, designed as a comprehensive outreach program, aims to connect with fishermen communities along the coastline, understanding their challenges, experiences, and aspirations. This initiative also serves as a platform to create awareness about government schemes and programs available to them.

The participation in Sagar Parikrama Phase –IX extends beyond political figures, including officials from the Fisheries Department Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, District officials, Senior officials from the Department of Fisheries, Government of India, National Fisheries Development Board, National Institute of Fisheries Post Harvest Technology and Training, Fishery Survey of India, Central Institute of Fisheries Nautical & Engineering Training, and the Indian Coast Guard.

Various stakeholders, ranging from fishers and fishermen representatives to fish farmers, entrepreneurs, fishermen cooperative society leaders, professionals, and scientists, are expected to actively engage in the events and interactions during the journey from Thondi, Ramnad District of Tamil Nadu, to Chennai, traversing other districts and culminating in Puducherry.

This initiative builds upon the success of the first eight segments of Sagar Parikrama, which covered 4,115 kilometres across eight coastal states and union territories. The government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the fishing community and fostering economic upliftment through schemes like Kisan Credit Card (KCC) and Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) is evident in this progressive initiative. Sagar Parikrama remains a crucial platform for disseminating information about these schemes, promoting responsible fisheries practices, and safeguarding marine ecosystems.

Mauritius played host to the 27th annual meeting of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) that took place recently, resulting in crucial developments for the sustainable management of fisheries in the Indian Ocean. The assembly concluded with the adoption of nine pivotal conservation and management measures.

A notable achievement is the EU’s endorsement of a measure ensuring the sustainable management of bigeye tuna. This measure establishes explicit catch limits for all nations operating in the region, safeguarding against the exceedance of global quotas. Special provisions have been included to empower coastal states in developing their fisheries. Demonstrating commitment, the EU has committed to the most substantial catch reduction, reducing EU catches by 18.7% against the 2017-2021 declared catch average.

However, discussions on yellowfin tuna and setting catch limits for skipjack tuna did not yield agreements, prompting the EU’s regret. Hopes persist for future progress in managing these stocks.

Another triumph lies in the adoption of the EU’s longstanding proposal to enhance the compliance process of the IOTC. Amendments to the rules of the Compliance Committee were approved, marking a significant stride in ensuring fishing activities align with applicable laws, regulations, and conservation measures. The proposal supports IOTC countries in identifying priority areas for enhanced compliance.

Further, the IOTC adopted crucial measures to safeguard seabirds and cetaceans from the adverse impacts of tuna fisheries. The EU co-sponsored the measure protecting cetaceans, aligning with the IOTC’s ‘ecosystem approach’ that considers the entire ecosystem in fisheries management.

In a pioneering move, the IOTC, with the EU’s co-sponsorship, adopted a proposal to establish minimum electronic monitoring standards (Electronic Monitoring System – EMS or Remote Electronic Monitoring – REM). This marks a historic step for a regional fisheries management organization (RFMO), allowing for increased observer coverage in the near future, especially vital for artisanal vessels responsible for half of the catches in IOTC.

Despite these positive strides, the IOTC faced challenges in agreeing on a much-needed new resolution for the management of drifting fish aggregating devices (FADs). The EU proposed a comprehensive resolution covering various aspects of the FAD fishery, including plastic pollution and limiting FAD numbers. The EU continues to extend an open invitation for dialogue to find a universally acceptable solution that would have a tangible impact on the ground.”

US Government Grants $2 Million for Research on Microalgae as Sustainable Aquaculture Feed

A $2 million grant from the Department of Energy is set to explore the feasibility of growing microalgae using carbon dioxide captured from power plant emissions for aquaculture feed. The partnership between the University College Santa Cruz’s ecological aquaculture research team and Global Algae Innovations aims to investigate whether Spirulina microalgae can contribute to addressing the climate crisis. Spirulina is known for being a complete protein source, providing 4g of protein, along with significant amounts of vitamin B, copper, and iron, with just 1 tablespoon (7g).

Global Algae Innovations will utilize captured carbon dioxide from flue gas, the exhaust from combustion power plants, to cultivate and process Spirulina. The focus will be on maximizing energy and cost efficiency in the growth process.

Pallab Sarker, assistant professor of environmental studies at UC Santa Cruz, will conduct trials to understand the biochemical characteristics of the gas-grown Spirulina, comparing nutrients, anti-nutrients, minerals, and trace and heavy metals to conventionally grown Spirulina. The next step involves incorporating the product into an experimental fish feed formula to assess its digestibility by rainbow trout. This trial will examine taste preferences and nutrient absorption compared to conventionally grown algae.

Dave Hazlebeck, CEO of Global Algae Innovations, highlighted the company’s cost-effective algae-growing technology and expressed the need for research to optimize the biomass for fish feed. If successful for rainbow trout, Spirulina could emerge as a sustainable, high-performing alternative protein source, potentially replacing traditional fish feed ingredients derived from wild-caught fish products or terrestrial crops.

The Department of Aquaculture at the College of Fisheries, AAU, Raha, orchestrated a comprehensive training program and exposure visit on sustainable aquaculture. This initiative targeted Fishery Demonstrators from Karbi Anglong, Assam, and fish farmers from Kiphire district, Nagaland. The event, held at Kolong Kapili, aimed to enhance participants’ knowledge and skills in sustainable aquaculture practices.

Welcoming the attendees, Jyotish Talukdar, Director of Kolong Kapili, shed light on the NGO’s focus on training and skill development in fisheries and sustainable aquaculture for entrepreneurship development. Dr. Kamaleswar Kalita, Professor & Head of the Department of Aquaculture, COF, AAU, Raha, underscored the significance of the fisheries sector in entrepreneurship development in Assam. He encouraged participants to embrace an entrepreneurial mindset by adopting scientific approaches in fish farming.

Dr. Pabitra Kr Saharia, Associate Professor at COF, Raha, emphasized the importance of integrated farming systems and highlighted the developmental activities of Kolong Kapili in supporting entrepreneurship and livelihoods through sustainable aquaculture in the state. Kaustubh Bhagawati, Assistant Professor in the Department of Aquaculture, COF, Raha, shared scientific insights on elevating the fisheries and aquaculture scenario in Assam. He focused on the potential of small indigenous fish culture in Assam, emphasizing its significant medicinal value for human nutrition.

As part of the program, the Department of Aquaculture, COF, AAU, Raha, released 2,000 fish seed (fingerlings) of Cirrhinus reba, commonly known as Lashim Bhangon, at the ICAR-CIFA recognized aquaculture field school of Kolong Kapili, Bagibari. The College of Fisheries has successfully developed breeding and seed production technology for the high-value indigenous fish C. reba (Reba carp) with support from the Department of Fisheries, Government of Assam, under the Gene Bank Project.

Telangana’s remarkable achievements in revitalizing the agricultural sector and supporting public sector undertakings were lauded by IT and Industry Minister K T Rama Rao on Thursday. Speaking at the inauguration of the Telangana Vijaya Dairy’s mega plant in Raviryal, Rangareddy district, he emphasized the state’s successes in areas where the central government faced challenges.

Minister Rao noted that despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promise to double farmers’ incomes by 2022, this goal had not been realized across India. However, Telangana stood as an exception due to the state government’s dedicated efforts. While public sector undertakings faced setbacks at the national level, Telangana remained committed to supporting and strengthening them with unwavering hand-holding, according to Minister Rao.

Telangana Vijaya Dairy, contributing to the burgeoning white revolution in the state, has witnessed substantial growth, with milk collection surpassing 4 lakh litres compared to 1.5 lakh litres in 2014. The mega dairy plant, established at a cost of Rs. 250 crore, is expected to bring additional benefits to dairy farmers. The state government’s commitment to implementing an incentive of Rs. 4 per litre underscores its support for the dairy sector.

Minister Rao highlighted the growth in paddy production, which has risen from 68 lakh metric tonnes at the time of bifurcation to over 3.5 crore metric tonnes today. The inland fisheries sector has also experienced a revolution with substantial support from the state government, contributing significantly to local communities.

Telangana’s meat industry, supported by a substantial investment of over Rs 11,000 crore in sheep rearing for Golla and Kuruma communities, has witnessed a transformative phase. Minister Rao also hinted at an upcoming yellow revolution with the state government’s significant backing for oil palm cultivation.

The event was attended by Animal Husbandry Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav and Education Minister P Sabitha Indra Reddy. The state’s commitment to multifaceted agricultural and industrial development was reiterated during the ceremony.

The subsequent day will see the Minister’s visit to Puducherry, where he will actively participate in various government events. A significant highlight of this leg will be the inauguration of projects aimed at elevating maritime infrastructure. This involves the expansion of Thengaithittu harbor, introducing an additional berth, and implementing improved facilities. A substantial financial allocation of approximately ₹100 crore from the Centre has been confirmed by Minister for Public Works K. Lakshminarayanan to fortify infrastructure, thereby boosting fish production under the PMMSY scheme.

While in Puducherry, Mr. Rupala will persist in the distribution of welfare assistance under the PMMSY, underscoring the government’s unwavering commitment to bolstering the fisheries sector. Vaccine manufacturer Indian Immunologicals (IIL) has announced a groundbreaking collaboration with the Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) for the commercial development of a vaccine targeting Hemorrhagic Septicemia in freshwater fish.

This partnership builds upon IIL’s entry into the aqua business in October 2022, where it ventured into products for the aquaculture health market, focusing on pond management and fish or shrimp gut management. Following this, IIL had previously revealed its commitment to the commercial development of fish vaccines through a collaboration with the Central Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE).

Hemorrhagic septicemia, also known as Aeromonas Septicemia, ulcer disease, or red-sore disease, poses a significant threat to freshwater fish farming globally. Caused by Aeromonas Hydrophila, an opportunistic pathogenic bacterium, this disease is considered a substantial economic challenge in Indian aquaculture. IIL highlighted in a release that all major cultured freshwater fish species in India, including rohu, catla, mrigal, silver carp, grass carp, common carp, medium carps, channel catfish, and eel, are susceptible to this ailment.

CIFA, an Indian Council of Agricultural Research Institute based in Bhubaneswar, has played a pivotal role in researching and developing a vaccine candidate against Aeromonas Septicemia. Emphasizing the absence of fish vaccines on a commercial scale in the country to prevent aquaculture infections, ICAR-CIFA Director Pramoda Kumar Sahoo expressed satisfaction that IIL has stepped forward for the commercial development of this crucial vaccine.

“IIL is the first in India to get to fish vaccines. We are working on multiple fronts in defining pathways for the commercial development of fish vaccines,” stated K. Anand Kumar, Managing Director of IIL, underlining the pioneering nature of this venture. This collaborative effort signifies a significant step toward addressing health challenges in the aquaculture industry, reflecting a commitment to advancing research and technology in the domain of fisheries and aquaculture in India.

Kochi – In response to the concerning rise in whale stranding events along the Indian coast, a dedicated research team from the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has launched a comprehensive 100-day coastal survey. This initiative, part of a collaborative research project with the Fishery Survey of India under the Ministry of Fisheries, focuses on assessing the stock and population of marine mammals in Indian waters.

Commencing the survey from Kochi, researchers will delve into understanding the diversity and distribution of marine mammals within 12 nautical miles of the Indian coast. The primary objective is to analyse the correlation between stranding events and changing climatic conditions, employing habitat modelling and recording stranding incidents.

The joint project aspires to garner a holistic understanding of marine mammal behaviour, population dynamics, and ecology. This knowledge is considered pivotal in formulating effective conservation measures for India’s marine mammal populations.

R Ratheesh Kumar, Principal Investigator of the project, highlighted the potential impact of extreme climatic events on the behaviour and distribution patterns of marine mammals. Kumar emphasized that species in these ecosystems are highly sensitive to environmental factors such as habitat changes, shifts in distribution, alteration in migration routes, and climatic conditions like rising ocean temperatures, changing cyclonic patterns, and storm surges.

The increased frequency of cyclones and storm surges, according to Kumar, might be contributing to the rising incidents of whale strandings. To address this, the CMFRI team aims to closely monitor such occurrences at sea and gather crucial data for in-depth analysis.

The marine mammal assessment project was initiated by the institute in 2021, during which 16 marine mammal species were recorded within the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) through on-board visual surveys. After a temporary hiatus, the project has been resumed in 2023, employing the line transect methodology for sighting and species-level counting of animals. The well-trained observers use binoculars and the naked eye alternately during the survey, systematically sampling specific areas for marine mammals to ensure representative coverage of the entire region.
