Cargill Innovation Centre in Norway Expands Research Facilities for Enhanced Aquaculture Trials

Cargill Innovation Centre (CIC) in Dirdal, Norway, has completed a significant expansion, increasing one of its two research sites from four to 12 pens at a cost of NOK 15 million (£1.2m). The other sea site facility already boasts 12 pens. Additionally, the total biomass ceiling has been approved for an increase from 910 tonnes to 1,400 tonnes, providing greater flexibility for feed and feeding trials.

While the overall allowed biomass for both sites remain at 1,560 tons, the expansion allows for more advanced nutritional trials at nearly full scale. Terje Utne, responsible for Cargill Aqua Nutrition’s field trials in Norway, explained that this expansion enables simultaneous trials with up to four different feeds, enhancing experimental design and providing more valuable scientific outcomes compared to traditional trials.

The improved facility allows for exploration of extremes in experimental designs, providing a better starting point for adapting feeds to variations in raw material prices, availability, salmon prices, customer requests, and more. Kjetil Frafjord, responsible for day-to-day operations at the site, expressed satisfaction with the expansion’s seamless execution, emphasizing the absence of injuries or accidents throughout the development project.

Cargill’s R&D operations director, Tor Andre Giskegjerde, highlighted the importance of the innovation center in Dirdal, positioning Cargill to offer top-tier advice and fish feed. The expansion aligns with the growing emphasis on sustainable feed in Norway, with the government elevating it to a national societal mission. Cargill is poised to contribute to this mission by advancing its research and development efforts for new and more sustainable aquaculture feed.

Mapping the Global Trade of Fish: Tracing Pollution Pathways and Human Exposure

Over the last half-century, the booming global trade of fish and fish products has created a unique challenge—how to identify and quantify human exposure to contaminants from imported marine products. With marine fish consumption surpassing that of meat and international fish exports skyrocketing, concerns about the global transfer of contaminants through food trade have come to the forefront.

The increased trade in fish raises worries about the potential transfer of contaminants through food exports and imports, surpassing the traditional routes of long-range transport through the atmosphere or ocean currents. Contamination from distant sources can lead to higher dietary exposures than locally sourced products, particularly concerning for species like herring, Atlantic cod, and tuna that may accumulate bioaccumulative contaminants such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and mercury.

Despite bans on substances like PCBs, they persist in marine fish, especially in coastal areas of Western Europe and the eastern USA. Additionally, fish raised in seawater mariculture systems, fed on wild-caught fish-meal, also face exposure to PCBs and other persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from multiple sources. The complex landscape of global fish production and trade makes it challenging to quantify the toxic chemical exposure faced by consumers who include fish in their diets.

In a groundbreaking study published in Nature Food, Huang and colleagues sought to quantify consumer exposure to POPs, using PCB-153 as a representative contaminant, due to its resistance to biodegradation and extensive monitoring data availability. To estimate concentrations of PCB-153 in marine fish globally, the researchers employed chemical fate and bioaccumulation models. These models used global PCB emission data and atmospheric transport models to estimate concentrations in air, water, and sediment. Bioaccumulation models were then used to estimate POP concentrations in 38 species of coastal marine fish. The study focused on seven broad categories of fish: anchovies, herring-like, cod-like, flatfish, salmon, tuna and billfish, and all other fish.

The results were illuminating. They revealed that a significant proportion (84%) of PCB exposure in sub-Saharan fish consumers could be attributed to fish imported from Western and Northern Europe, as opposed to less than 2% from local fish. On the flip side, European fish consumers had reduced exposure due to consumption of fish imported from regions with low PCB-153 contamination.

The study also included a case study on Atlantic salmon trade, showcasing that PCB-153 accumulation in wild-caught and farmed salmon could be estimated within a factor of two of measured concentrations. Importantly, the study highlighted the lower PCB-153 estimated daily intake from salmon raised with plant-based feeds compared to traditional fish-based feed.

Huang and colleagues have developed a valuable tool for estimating exposure to specific chemicals from the global trade of marine fish and fish products on a per-country basis. This approach could potentially be expanded to other sectors, including freshwater aquaculture and coastal crustacean fisheries. As aquaculture continues to grow and fish becomes an increasingly vital dietary protein source, this information may prove invaluable for stakeholders, policymakers, and trade-related agencies in shaping sustainable and safe practices in the fishing and aquaculture industries.

A fisherman hailing from Odisha’s Paradeep created waves in the Digha fish market, Jaleswar, Balasore district, by selling a colossal two-quintal Kavala fish for an astounding sum of Rs 1.27 lakhs. The transaction reportedly took place with a Kolkata-based company securing the purchase, as confirmed by reliable sources.

This remarkable sale follows closely on the heels of another extraordinary event where a massive Bhola fish, weighing over 1 quintal and 10 kg, was sold for an impressive Rs 25,000. Interestingly, this Bhola fish also originated from Balasore, Odisha.

According to reports, fishermen from the Paradeep area embarked on a nighttime fishing expedition, resulting in the capture of the colossal fish in their nets, weighing in at more than 110 kg. Subsequently, they transported their catch to the Digha fish market in West Bengal for sale.

The auction of the enormous fish garnered significant attention, with multiple buyers vying for the prized specimen. Ultimately, a Kolkata-based company known as BBC emerged as the successful bidder, acquiring the fish at a substantial price of Rs 25 thousand. The transactions underscore the lucrative and thriving market for extraordinary catches in the region, showcasing the value placed on these remarkable marine specimens.

Researchers from the University of Amsterdam and the Natural History Museum London have debunked the belief that the houting fish, once declared extinct, is thriving in the North Sea estuaries. Contrary to previous declarations, the houting has been found to be alive and well, as evidenced by DNA comparisons with the European whitefish.

The research team conducted DNA analysis on houting specimens dating back over 250 years, carefully preserved in the museum. Surprisingly, they discovered minimal genetic differences between the houting and the European whitefish, a species that is still common today. This unexpected finding challenges the official status of houting as extinct.

In a recent study published in BMC Ecology and Evolution, the scientists isolated mitochondrial DNA from historic houting specimens, including a dried sample from 1754 used by Linnaeus for the species description. The subsequent DNA analysis resulted in a phylogenetic tree, grouping all examined houting specimens with the European whitefish.

Lead author Rob Kroes of the University of Amsterdam explained, “The European whitefish is fairly widespread in Western and Northern Europe, both in freshwater rivers and lakes, estuaries, and the sea. Because we found no species difference between houting of the past and today’s European whitefish, we do not consider the houting to be extinct.”

The confusion surrounding the houting’s extinction declaration in 2008 is attributed to variations in morphological traits. Previous assumptions were based on features such as snout length and gill raker count, which are now deemed inadequate for distinguishing the two species. DNA analysis has provided unequivocal evidence that houting is not a separate species.

While the researchers propose a change in the official Latin species name, further DNA analysis of the aged specimens may pose challenges due to the degraded state of the DNA. Despite this, the implications of this rediscovery are significant, particularly for conservation efforts. As Kroes notes, “The protected status of various coregonids is a mess. According to the IUCN, North Sea houting is extinct; at the same time, there are various European nature laws that state that both houting and European whitefish must be protected. So, we are actually protecting an extinct species that is just swimming around at the moment.”

This rediscovery prompts a re-evaluation of conservation policies and underscores the complexities of species classification, emphasizing the need for ongoing scientific scrutiny.

Fisheries Department’s Initiatives Propel Record Fish Production in Kashmir Valley

Due to the proactive initiatives of the Fisheries Department in the Kashmir Valley, the annual fish production has reached an unprecedented level, steadily increasing with each passing day.

The department reported that the valley witnesses an annual fish production of 20.08 lakh tonnes, while the local consumption stands at 25 lakh tonnes per year. Despite this substantial production, the valley still imports 4 lakh tonnes of fish from outside the state. In a bid to double the production, the LG administration is spearheading new initiatives, including awareness programs designed to attract people, particularly the youth, towards fisheries.

A recent one-day seminar and awareness program held at Zanipora Fish Farm in the Shopian district of South Kashmir aimed to educate unemployed youth and private fish farm holders. The event, attended by Assistant Director of Fisheries Zahoor Ahmed Mir, featured discussions on various schemes offered by the department and modern scientific research related to fish farming.

Mir, the chief guest, urged unemployed youth to embrace self-employment opportunities provided by government schemes, emphasizing that venturing into fish farming could not only lead to personal employment but also create opportunities for others. He encouraged educated youth to explore government-sponsored schemes for better employment prospects instead of solely pursuing government jobs.

The awareness camp highlighted schemes such as carp fish farming initiated in 2004-2005 under the PM package, trout farming in the private sector since 2009 under RKVY, and the National Mission for Protein Supplement (MMPS) in 2011-2012 to promote the fish business in the private sector.

Experts at the camp stressed the importance of implementing these schemes at the grassroots level, ensuring that people are informed and can avail themselves of the opportunities at the right time. The camp also provided insights into modern fish farming methods.

Youth engaged in fish farming expressed gratitude for the support received from the Fisheries Department and reported profitable returns from their ventures. They called on other unemployed youth to explore self-employment opportunities and benefit from the available schemes. The overall success of these initiatives signifies a positive trend towards sustainable fish farming and economic empowerment in the region.

Rajasthan government has sanctioned a Rs 2 crore project, greenlighted by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, aimed at providing free fish seeds to 20,000 farmers. Each farmer or water pond (diggi) will receive 1,000 fingerlings of prominent Indian carp varieties, including rohu, catla, and mrigal. This initiative, outlined in the Budget for 2023-24, recently secured financial approval.

Training sessions on fisheries will be conducted at the district level for selected farmers to ensure effective utilization of the provided fish seeds. Rajasthan boasts extensive water bodies covering approximately 430,000 hectares, complemented by about 70 rivers and canals spanning around 30,000 hectares. Over the past three decades, the state has witnessed consistent growth in inland fisheries.

While Rajasthan currently ranks 18th in fish output, the area dedicated to fish culture and production has experienced a noteworthy increase. Large reservoirs contribute about 60% of the total fish production, with tanks and ponds making up the remainder. The productivity of these reservoirs exceeds the national average at 55 kg per hectare.

In line with the commitment to fisheries development, Chief Minister Gehlot had announced the establishment of the Brackish Water Aquaculture Laboratory in Churu district during this year’s Budget speech. Ongoing efforts are in progress to materialize this initiative.

The government is actively promoting innovations in tribal sub-plan areas, focusing on livelihood creation for tribal fishermen in regions such as Jaisamand Dam in Udaipur, Kadana backwater in Dungarpur, and Mahi Bajaj Sagar in Banswara. These efforts underscore the commitment to sustainable fisheries practices and economic empowerment in the state.

Bangladesh has experienced a remarkable surge in fish production over the last 12 years, primarily driven by the growth in aquaculture, specifically in three key fish varieties—pangas, tilapia, and climbing fish (koi). This boost has not only made these varieties a major source of protein for low-income families but has also generated job opportunities and income for thousands in rural and suburban areas.

According to the Department of Fisheries, the annual production of cultured pangas rose from 1.55 lakh tonnes in 2010-11 to 3.95 lakh tonnes in the 2021-22 fiscal year. Similarly, the output of tilapia increased 3.36 times to 3.29 lakh tonnes, and climbing fish production saw a 350 percent jump to 57,244 tonnes during the same period. Overall, fish production through cultured processes nearly doubled in Bangladesh, increasing from 11.99 lakh tonnes to 21.66 lakh tonnes between fiscal years 2011 and 2022.

Aquaculture, or fish culture, involves raising fish species in captivity and managing their environment for improved growth and reproduction. Professor Mohammad Mahfujul Haque, an expert in aquaculture at Bangladesh Agriculture University, attributed the success to factors such as the availability of fish fries, the intake of artificial foods, and market demands.

Pangas, introduced to Bangladesh in the 1990s by the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI), has become particularly popular due to its high survival rate of almost 100 percent. This has attracted farmers in various regions of the country.

The contribution of fish farming to job creation surpasses other agricultural sectors, according to Professor Mahfujul Haque, emphasizing the substantial manpower involved in every step of fish farming and marketing.

Fish farming of pangas, tilapia, and climbing fish has played a pivotal role in boosting the total fish production in Bangladesh, which reached 47.59 lakh tonnes in the 2021-22 fiscal year—an increase of over 55 percent from 30.62 lakh tonnes in fiscal year 2011. Cultured fish now accounts for about 45 percent of the overall output.

 

Bangladesh, being the fifth-largest African fishing nation, faces an annual loss of approximately $70 million due to illegal fishing. The success of pangas, tilapia, and climbing fish farming is considered crucial for protecting the sector, which contributes around 5 percent to Bangladesh’s GDP and supports the livelihoods of approximately 24 million people.

BFRI Director General Yahia Mahmud sees potential for Bangladesh to make pangas a value-added product for export. The introduction of “white pangas” seven years ago is gaining attention, and Mahmud believes Bangladesh can easily enter the export market, especially since white pangas has higher demand in other countries.

The success of aquaculture in Bangladesh underscores the significance of innovative and sustainable approaches in meeting food security and economic development goals.

World’s First Integrated Offshore Wind and Aquaculture Facility Unveiled in Fujian Province

A wind power facility off the coast of Fujian province, known as “Guoneng Sharing,” is pioneering an innovative approach by utilizing spare space at its base for fish farming. This facility, the world’s first of its kind, seeks to enhance green development in the ocean.

Situated in Putian, “Guoneng Sharing” is designed as an integrated system that combines deep-sea floating wind power with aquaculture. The facility comprises a floating platform, a 4-megawatt wind turbine, and a sophisticated mooring and anchoring system.

The floating platform features a semisubmersible structure with three columns forming an equilateral triangle, standing at a height of 28 meters with a draft of 14 meters. Within this structure lies a net cage designed for aquaculture, utilizing a volume of water totaling 10,000 cubic meters—a capacity sufficient to nurture medium-sized fish fry for over a year.

To ensure safe and stable operations at sea, the platform is secured with nine anchor chains, each approximately 431 meters long. Each column is connected to three mooring cables, contributing to the overall stability of the structure.

Feng Xiaoxing, Deputy Chief Engineer of Jiangsu Longyuan Zhenhua Marine Engineering Co, the developer of the facility, highlighted the choice of Putian due to its abundant wind resources. The current phase involves fine-tuning and testing the equipment, with expectations that it will commence power generation by the end of this year.

The “Guoneng Sharing” initiative marks a significant stride toward sustainable energy and aquaculture practices, showcasing the potential for innovative, integrated solutions to promote green development in ocean environments.

In a move that has raised concerns in India’s seafood sector, Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy has proposed the India Shrimp Tariff Act, aiming to impose duties on shrimp imports from India. The Southern Shrimp Alliance (SSA), representing shrimp industry stakeholders in eight warm-water shrimp-producing U.S. states, has expressed support for the proposal.
Frozen shrimp, constituting nearly 70 percent of India’s seafood exports, achieved a record $8.09 billion in FY23, with the United States being the largest market for Indian seafood, predominantly shrimp.

Senator Cassidy alleges that highly subsidized Indian aquaculture shrimp accounts for 40 percent of all shrimp imports into the U.S., impacting the local shrimp industry, which now represents less than 10 percent of the shrimp consumed in the country. The proposed India Shrimp Tariff Act suggests a phased imposition of duties, starting at 10 percent in 2024, escalating to 20 percent in 2025, and reaching 40 percent from 2026 onwards, mirroring India’s duty rate on shrimp imports.
SSA Executive Director John Williams has welcomed the proposal, seeking support from other senators, citing what he perceives as unaddressed unfair trade practices by Indian shrimp exporters.

President of the All India Shrimp Hatcheries Association (AISHA), Ravi Kumar Yellanki, has urged the Indian government to respond proactively to counter potential challenges. However, the Seafood Exporters Association of India President Jagdish V Fofandi remains cautious, adopting a “wait and watch” policy.

The seafood industry has argued against the notion of heavy subsidies in aquaculture, with D Ramraj, past president of AISHA, asserting that subsidies available to Indian shrimp farmers are comparable to other aquaculture shrimp-producing nations.

Senator Cassidy’s claims also extend to the environmental and social sustainability of Indian shrimp aquaculture, citing issues such as deforestation, the use of banned antibiotics, and child labor. The proposed India Shrimp Tariff Act includes provisions to eliminate the exemption of cooked shrimp from the requirements of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s country-of-origin labeling (COOL) requirements.

As the proposal unfolds, concerns are voiced over its potential impact on the consumption of value-added Indian shrimps in the U.S. Moreover, this development comes at a challenging time for India’s seafood exports, with a downturn in FY23 due to poor demand and low prices in major importing markets such as the U.S., China, and Europe. Stakeholders are closely monitoring the situation as the industry faces potential disruptions and explores strategies to navigate the changing trade landscape.

Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa, has been revealed as the stage for an extraordinary example of adaptive radiation, an evolutionary phenomenon where one animal group gives rise to numerous species. Recent studies, published in Science and Nature, highlight that around 500 species of cichlids, a type of fish, emerged from just three swamp-dwelling cichlid populations in a remarkably brief 16,000 years. In contrast, Darwin’s finches took millions of years to evolve into 18 distinct species.

This rapid adaptive radiation among Lake Victoria’s cichlids occurred through swift hybridization, where two species create offspring with a mix of traits. The genetic differences resulting from this process allowed cichlids to occupy every niche in the lake’s ecosystem, from algae-consuming bottom feeders to large, sharp-toothed predators. Professor Ole Seehausen from the University of Bern and the Swiss water research Institute, EAWAG, noted that preserving diverse cichlid species creates a resource pool enabling adaptation to environmental changes, such as coping with rising temperatures through occasional hybridization and sharing adaptations.

Researchers, analyzing 464 cichlid genomes in Lake Victoria and the Great African Lakes region, uncovered a fascinating ecological narrative. Initially supplied by three swamp-dwelling cichlid species when Lake Victoria refilled about 16,000 years ago, the fish shared the same gene pool. As populations merged, they produced hybrid fish and different gene variants, leading to a diverse array of traits, including predation strategies and dietary preferences.

One noteworthy example involves Zooplanktivores blending with genes of large predator cichlids to create dwarf predators, representing a successful amalgamation of the parent species’ traits. This process of “genetic recycling” enabled cichlids to rapidly, in evolutionary terms, occupy every ecological niche within Lake Victoria. The cichlids of Lake Victoria, with their swift diversification, stand as a testament to the extraordinary pace of evolutionary change in response to environmental challenges.
