Interactions between seabirds and fisheries have been documented since ancient times, with seabirds often attracted to fishing boats for trawl discards. Additionally, these birds can provide valuable information to fishers regarding fish aggregations, including species such as anchovies, mackerels, sardines, and tunas.

The east coast of India, renowned as a haven for migratory birds, was recently the site of notable seabird activity. During a fishery resources survey conducted by the vessel MFV MatsyaDarshini of the Fishery Survey of India (FSI) in Andhra Pradesh waters in June 2024, large numbers of Flesh-footed Shearwaters (Ardenna carneipes) were observed. This species, belonging to the family Procellariidae, is known for its large, broad wings and dark blackish-brown plumage, with paler and greyer underwings and flight feathers. The bird’s robust bill is pale pink with a blackish tip, while its legs and feet are flesh-pink.

Dr. P. Kumar, Young Professional at the PMMSY Project, Chennai base of FSI, reported that the Flesh-footed Shearwater breeds on islands in Australia and New Zealand and is a well-known migratory bird. Its distribution spans the southern Indian and southwestern Pacific Oceans during the breeding season, with migratory paths extending to South Africa, the Arabian Sea, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the broader Pacific Ocean. The recent sightings in the Bay of Bengal suggest a noteworthy extension of this migration pattern.

These observations underscore the intricate relationship between seabirds and marine ecosystems, offering insights into migration trends and the potential impacts of fishing activities on bird populations. The ongoing survey by MFV MatsyaDarshini aims to continue monitoring these interactions to support sustainable fisheries management and conservation efforts.

On Sunday, 7th July 2024, the Fish Catch Festival, organized by 5ish Market, captivated the community with a day full of excitement, competition, and delicious food. Held at Hyderabad, the festival attracted over 300 participants, eager to showcase their fishing skills and enjoy the festivities.

The event featured several rounds of fishing competitions, each with 30 participants competing to catch a fish within a 10-minute time frame. The first person to catch a fish in each round received a special gift, adding a thrilling element to the competition. Those who didn’t manage to catch the first fish were still rewarded with their catch as a gift to take home, ensuring that everyone went away with a prize.

One of the festival’s highlights was fish curry lunch provided by 5ish Market. This culinary treat not only satisfied appetites but also brought people together, creating a sense of friendship and community among those who shared in it.The Fish Catch Festival was more than just an event; it was a celebration of community spirit and sustainable fishing practices.

The coastal areas of Kerala and Tamil Nadu are expected to experience the ‘kallakkadal’ phenomenon—sudden sea swells causing rough waves and high tides—until 11:30 PM on Monday, according to the weather agency. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) issued an alert on Sunday to fishermen and coastal residents about the potential sea surge.

INCOIS, the central agency responsible for issuing weather warnings for fishermen in the country, has advised fishermen to safely moor their vessels in the harbor. Coastal residents living in accident-prone areas have been urged to relocate to safer locations due to the possible danger. The agency also recommended that people completely avoid traveling to beaches and venturing into the sea during this period

India is contemplating the establishment of an underwater biodiversity research laboratory in the Indian Ocean to study various types of seabed flora and fauna at different depths. This initiative aims to explore the potential of these marine resources for human consumption. The lab, a part of the government’s long-term vision to make India a developed nation by 2047, is being conceptualized under the Deep Ocean Mission. It seeks to position India as a transnational and regional hub for marine biology and biotechnology research.

A senior government official said that the underwater lab will be among the most technologically advanced facilities for the exploration and conservation of deep-sea biodiversity. “The proposal is at a concept stage, and several rounds of deliberation between key stakeholders will be held before it gets onto the drawing board,” the official stated.

According to the official, the lab will be responsible for creating an inventory of deep-sea fauna and flora in the Indian Ocean through systematic sampling. The government believes that the deep-sea contains novel biomolecules of industrial and biomedical importance. The exploration of deep-sea organisms, particularly microorganisms, is expected to open up new frontiers in drug discovery and development.

Rohendro Salam, a progressive fish farmer from Laphupat Tera village, has made significant strides in the breeding of sareng at his farm pond. Utilizing a blend of Indigenous Technical Knowledge (ITK) and scientific methods, Rohendro has successfully replicated induced breeding, marking a milestone in the field of sareng hatchery.

Rohendro’s achievements follow in the footsteps of other notable breeders such as Chungkham Kopeshwor Singh of Wangoi Makha Leikai, Laimujam Dinamani Singh of Tentha Mayai Leikai, and Ningthoujam Basanta Singh of Khordak Ichin. These pioneers have collectively contributed to the resurgence of sareng culture in Manipur, a movement that gained momentum after Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s announcement of an ambitious action program to revive Wallago attu in 2021.

In recognition of his contributions, Rohendro won the State Level Fish Fair in 2021, organized by the Department of Fisheries, Manipur, for producing the highest quantity of fish species. His accolades continued with the Haricharan Das Best Progressive Fish Farmer Award from the College of Fisheries, Lembucherra, Tripura, in 2022. Most recently, in 2023, he was honored with the ICAR-Farmer Innovative Award in Umiam, Meghalaya, for his outstanding efforts in reviving sareng in Manipur.

Rohendro Salam’s dedication and innovative approach have not only set a benchmark in the field but have also positioned him as a leading figure in Manipur’s fish farming community.

In a significant stride towards enhancing aquaculture productivity, the Papum Pare Fisheries department recently distributed crucial resources to 243 fish farmers under government schemes. This initiative, part of the Atma Nirbhar Matsya Palan Yojana (ANMPY) and Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), aims to bolster local livelihoods and meet the rising demand for fish in the market.

The distribution event, held at the Government Fish Farm in Emchi, saw the dissemination of six lakh fingerlings indigenous to the region. Varieties such as rohu, catla, mrigul, grass carp, labio bata, and labio genius were chosen for their robust survival rates and high yield potential. Alongside fingerlings, 600 tons of nutritionally balanced fish feed and lime were provided. This holistic approach ensures optimal growth, health, and productivity of the fish, thereby boosting profitability for farmers.

District Commissioner Jiken Bomjen emphasized the safety and profitability of fish farming, urging unemployed youths to consider it as a viable career option. He highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting local farmers through quality inputs and technical assistance.

Kipa Taja, District Fisheries Development Officer, reiterated the department’s dedication to fostering a thriving aquaculture industry. Training sessions on best farming practices, efficient feed utilization, and sustainable techniques are also being conducted to empower farmers further. Additionally, the successful introduction of high-altitude cold-water fishlike trout promises to significantly enhance income generation for farmers in Silsango and Leporiang.

With such initiatives, the Papum Pare Fisheries department aims to not only boost fish production but also transform aquaculture into a sustainable and profitable venture for local communities.

India’s seafood exports reached an all-time high volume in the fiscal year 2023-24, with 17,81,602 metric tonnes of marine products shipped, valued at ₹60,523 crore. Despite facing global market challenges, the country managed to export seafood worth $7.38 billion, demonstrating resilience and strong international demand. The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) attributes this success to the significant contributions from states like Andhra Pradesh.

MPEDA Chairman D.V. Swamy highlighted that frozen shrimp was the major export item, with 7,16,004 metric tonnes shipped during the fiscal year. The USA emerged as the largest importer of Indian seafood, accounting for 34.53% (worth $2,549.15 million), followed by China at 25.33% ($1,384.89 million) and Japan at 6.06%. Other key export items included frozen fish, squid, cuttlefish, octopus, lobster, and dried fish, which were shipped to countries like Japan, Canada, Thailand, Belgium, and Spain.

Andhra Pradesh played a pivotal role in this export boom, contributing approximately 32% of the total seafood exports. Farmers from Andhra Pradesh were instrumental in exporting to major markets such as the USA, China, the European Union, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. MPEDA Andhra Pradesh Region Joint Director A. Jeyabal emphasized that the state has been focusing on producing quality shrimp and value-added seafood products, which are in high demand overseas.

Training programs are being conducted for aqua farmers in Andhra Pradesh to enhance the quality and value of their products. Recently, experts from Vietnam provided training to young entrepreneurs, highlighting the importance of quality and innovation in seafood production. These initiatives not only boost exports but also create employment opportunities and improve the livelihoods of local farmers.

The Jai Bharat Ksheera Rama Aqua Farmers’ Association successfully hosted the State Aqua Farmers’ Grand Conference on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at SSS Kalyana Mandapam, Poolapalli – Agarru Road. This significant gathering addressed critical issues facing the aqua farming community and charted a path forward for sustainable and profitable aqua farming. Aqua farming, a significant contributor to the state’s economy, has been facing numerous challenges in recent years, affecting the livelihood of many dedicated farmers. This conference provided an essential platform for discussing these issues and finding collective solutions.

The conference delved into various pressing matters such as the financial losses incurred over the past five years, the manipulation of shrimp prices by processing companies, and the unchecked rise in feed prices despite decreasing raw material costs. Additionally, it addressed the quality standards of seed production, the roles of commission agents and shed owners, and considered the implementation of a “Craft Holiday” to alleviate ongoing hardships. The meeting also evaluated the new government’s promises, strategized on ensuring direct receipt of subsidies from NFDP and government bodies, and discussed the activities of national and state-level associations. A key highlight was the election of a new committee for the Andhra Pradesh State Aqua Farmers’ Association.

Aqua farmers actively participated in the conference, sharing their insights and experiences, which were invaluable in shaping the future of the industry. Their presence and contributions helped build a unified voice to advocate for the needs and rights of aqua farmers across the state. Distinguished guests who attended the conference included leading experts from the aqua farming industry, government officials, and representatives from various farmers’ associations. Notably, Gottumukkala Gandhi Bhagavan Raju, President of the association, and Bonam Venkata Narasayya (Chinnababu), Secretary of the association, were present and contributed significantly to the discussions, providing their invaluable insights and efforts towards the success of this meeting.

During the conference, President Gottumukkala Gandhi Bhagavan Raju emphasized the need to establish feed, seed, and processing companies under the farmers’ association with the support of a 90% government subsidy. He assured the farmers that any issues they face would be addressed promptly and personally. He announced plans to meet soon with ministers including Nimmala Rama Naidu, Agriculture Minister Achen Naidu, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan to discuss and resolve the issues affecting aqua farmers. Bhimavaram farmer Subbaraju highlighted the need to reduce losses by improving counting practices, while Bonam Venkata Narasayya urged farmers to follow association guidelines to overcome difficulties.

Amalapuram farmer Nagabhushanam expressed confidence in Gandhi Bhagavan Raju’s leadership in resolving farmers’ problems, while Raghurama Raju stressed the responsibility of every farmer to protect the aquaculture sector. Speakers Sattibabu and Yuvaraju encouraged support for all association initiatives.

At the conclusion of the conference, Gandhi Bhagavan Raju proposed a 45-day deadline for resolving farmers’ issues, failing which a “Craft Holiday” would be declared, a move that received strong support from the farmers. He also advocated for local marketing of shrimp to highlight its benefits and affordability compared to chicken and mutton, suggesting that farmers themselves open retail shops to sell shrimp directly to the public.

The conference was attended by hundreds of aqua farmers from across the state, with notable attendees including Rudraraju Satyanarayana Raju, Kodi Vijay Bhaskar Rao, John David Raju, Angara Varaprasad, Ramesh Raju, Sajja Bujji, Bonam Rangayya Naidu, Chanti Raju, and Meka Pani Indrudu. The gathering was marked by robust discussions and a collective resolve to address the challenges and opportunities in the aquaculture sector.

ICAR-CMFRI has joined forces with the Department of Fisheries, A&N Administration to organize a comprehensive 3-day training program on ‘Marine Ornamental Fish Breeding’. This event, which commenced today at the Fisheries Training Centre located in Marine Hill, A&N Islands, aims to equip participants with the latest knowledge and techniques in the breeding of marine ornamental fish. The training program is designed to benefit local fishers, marine enthusiasts, and professionals in the field of marine biology, offering them an opportunity to enhance their skills and contribute to the sustainable development of the marine ornamental fish industry.

The training sessions are being conducted by experts from ICAR-CMFRI and the Department of Fisheries, who bring with them a wealth of experience and expertise in marine fish breeding. Over the course of the three days, participants will engage in both theoretical and practical sessions, covering a wide range of topics such as broodstock management, larval rearing, and the use of advanced breeding techniques. The hands-on approach of the training is expected to provide participants with a thorough understanding of the breeding process, enabling them to apply these techniques in their own practices.
