Researchers in Tokyo have identified candidate genes that could enhance fish’s ability to thrive in warmer and saltier water. These findings have the potential to be a valuable resource for freshwater aquaculture breeding programs, especially in a world grappling with the effects of global warming on water quality and availability. The study’s results were recently published in the journal ‘Genomics.’

Freshwater aquaculture is a crucial source of essential nutrients and protein, and one popular species for such farming is Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). These fish have gained popularity due to their adaptability to various water conditions and production systems.

However, rising global temperatures have led to dwindling freshwater resources, putting pressure on fish farms and the people who depend on them for sustenance. The urgent need is for fish strains that can thrive despite increased salinity and water temperature.

To address this challenge, a team of researchers from the Earlham Institute, the University of East Anglia, and the University of Stirling delved into the tilapia genome. They aimed to identify genetic changes responsible for the species’ increased tolerance to changing water conditions.

The research focused on the gills, a vital organ for osmoregulation in fish, and involved the generation of DNA and RNA sequence data to study gene activity, regulation, and function. The team specifically looked for genetic differences in gene regulatory regions between Nile tilapia and 27 other tilapia species, assuming that these differences could be linked to the fish’s adaptation to varying water environments.

The researchers employed a genome sequencing approach to uncover potential transcription factor binding sites and genetic switches responsible for controlling gene expression. They pinpointed regions of the genome believed to control the activity of osmoregulatory genes, which influence gill function and how the fish responds to changing water conditions.

Several genes relevant to traits that enable tilapia to tolerate saltier water and adapt to freshwater were identified. These genes included those involved in metabolism and essential processes that help the fish maintain balance in response to environmental changes.

Dr. Tarang Mehta, a study author and postdoctoral research scientist at the Earlham Institute, emphasized the importance of these findings for breeders in need of genomic resources to enhance selective breeding programs and develop more resilient fish strains.

In a bid to boost the fishing sector in Telangana, the Marine Products Exports Development Authority (MPEDA) has advised focusing on the commercial cultivation of Tilapia and fungus species, in addition to scampi shrimps, in the state’s reservoirs. The aim is to prepare treated fish for export to other countries.

MPEDA officials have lauded the efforts of Industries Minister KT Rama Rao in attracting investments from fishing companies and encouraging them to establish a plant near Mid Manair in Rajanna Sircilla, which they consider a significant milestone in the development of the state’s fishing industry.

These recommendations were put forth during a study tour by Pittla Ravinder, Chairman of the State Fisheries Cooperative Societies Federation Limited, to Kerala. The delegation also included officials from the Society for Assistance to Fisherwomen (SAF), the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, and the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology in Kochi.

During the tour, Chairman Ravinder explored the possibility of introducing hybrid fishing boats powered by solar and wave energy in all of Telangana’s reservoirs, aiming to enhance the convenience of local fishermen.

Scientists and technicians from the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) pledged their full support for the development of Telangana’s fisheries sector. They offered scientific and technological cooperation to assist in the production of high-quality fish food items that have international popularity. Additionally, they expressed their willingness to provide technical support for the utilization of solar energy in cleaning and processing small fish, which are abundant in Telangana.

The CIFT technical department also committed to supporting the activities carried out by the Telangana Fisheries Federation in fish processing and value addition processes.

Fish Curry Considered for School Midday Meals in Karnataka and Telangana

Governments of Telangana and Karnataka are contemplating the inclusion of fish curry in their respective Midday Meal Schemes (MMS), sparking discussions about the nutritional and economic advantages of this potential addition.

The Karnataka government has recently expanded the distribution of eggs to twice a week in the MMS. Meanwhile, the Telangana government is deliberating a proposal put forth by the Telangana State Fishermen Cooperative Federation. Experts have emphasized the potential benefits of introducing fish as a protein source for schoolchildren, aligning their diets with locally available food resources.

According to Development Educationist Dr. VP Niranjanaradhya, the inclusion of protein in children’s diets is essential as per the Food Security Act. An absence of protein can lead to an imbalance in their nutrition, primarily comprising carbohydrates and fats. Dr. Niranjanaradhya believes that children should have the option to choose their food and should be sensitized from an early age about dietary choices. In coastal regions like Mangaluru and Udupi, fish is a staple part of daily meals, and its inclusion can be cost-effective while benefiting local fishermen.

Dr. Sylvia Karpagam, a public health doctor and researcher, echoes this sentiment, emphasizing that promoting local fish consumption can boost the local economy and support sustainability. Introducing fish in school meals, particularly in coastal areas and regions where dry fish is a dietary staple, could yield positive outcomes. However, Dr. Karpagam notes that Karnataka faced challenges when attempting to incorporate eggs into midday meals, and there was hesitation with similar initiatives like the Indira Canteens due to criticism.

Rishikesh Kashyap, Managing Director of the National Federation of Fishers Cooperatives, highlighted that the Telangana proposal includes various plans to promote the state’s fishing industry, such as introducing fish curry in midday meals. Similar proposals are under consideration in states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Although the Karnataka government has not taken this step yet, a potential collaboration with local fishermen could facilitate the implementation of such a program, supporting the growth of the fishing industry in the state.

India Urges EU to Allow Shrimp Exports from Newly-Listed Fishery Firms and Reduce Inspection Sampling Frequency

India has formally requested the European Union (EU) to permit newly-listed fishery companies to export farmed shrimps to the EU market and to lower the current stringent sampling frequency for inspections at border posts, according to the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying.

India is advocating for a reduction in the sampling frequency from the current 50% to revert to the previous norm of 10%. Additionally, India is seeking the re-listing of previously de-listed fishery establishments and urging the EU to grant export permission for aquaculture shrimps produced by newly-listed fishery companies in India.

Parshottam Rupala, the Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, articulated these vital concerns during a meeting with a delegation from the EU led by Virginijus Sinkevičius, the European Commissioner for Environment, Ocean, and Fisheries.

The bilateral meeting aimed to address several issues related to fisheries and aquaculture while exploring opportunities for collaboration between the two parties.

In response to the EU’s request, both sides have agreed to engage in bilateral discussions on crucial matters, including the port state measure agreement, fisheries subsidies issues within the World Trade Organization (WTO), Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) affairs, ‘Ocean and Fisheries Dialogue,’ combatting illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, and addressing market access-related concerns. These discussions will take place within the framework of a joint working group dedicated to fisheries.

As an extension of India’s diplomatic outreach, the EU has also received an invitation to participate in any aspect of the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI). This invitation was originally extended during the India-EU Leaders’ Summit in May 2021, underscoring India’s commitment to fostering cooperation in the vital domain of maritime affairs.

The Centre for Peninsular and Marine Fish Genetic Resources (PAGR), a division of ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR) based in Kochi, has identified three concerning viruses – Infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV), Cyprinid herpesvirus-2 (CyHV-2), and Carp edema virus (CEV) – posing a potential threat to Kerala’s thriving ornamental fish industry. These viruses are not typically found in Kerala, but without containment measures, they could jeopardize the industry’s health.

Director of PAGR, U.K. Sarkar, disclosed that the center is actively engaged in disease surveillance within ornamental fish farms across the state. This effort is part of the nationwide initiative known as the National Surveillance for Aquatic Animal Diseases (NSPAAD), which receives support under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).

Sources indicate that these viruses have the potential to cause severe diseases in various ornamental fish species, including koi, goldfish, and cichlid, often leading to widespread fatalities. Such outbreaks can result in significant economic losses for ornamental fish farmers and traders operating in Kerala. Additionally, these diseases pose a considerable risk to the international trade of ornamental fish, impacting the industry’s reputation and sustainability.

In response to this emerging threat, the PAGR center is collaborating closely with local fish farmers, traders, and regulatory authorities to devise effective strategies for disease prevention and management. The aim is to safeguard the continued growth and prosperity of Kerala’s ornamental fish industry, which contributes significantly to the region’s economy.

Breakthrough in Indian Pompano Cultivation in Karnataka’s Coastal Waters

Scientists at the Mangalore Regional Centre of ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute have achieved a significant milestone by successfully cultivating Indian Pompano (Trachinotus mookalee) for the first time in Karnataka. This accomplishment follows a decade-long journey that began with the introduction of cage culture in the state’s coastal waters in 2009-10.

The innovative cage culture technique, which has gained popularity, now boasts around 800-900 cages installed in estuarine waters along the Karnataka coast. The success of this method attracted financial support from the Department of Fisheries, Karnataka, National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), and other organizations, benefiting over 500 families engaged in the sector.

While seabass, red snapper, and snubnose pompano were successfully reared in these cages over the years, the cultivation of Indian Pompano marks a significant achievement. The inaugural farming project took place in Udupi district’s Swarna estuary, Paduthonse village, under the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan program (SCSP), focusing on inclusive growth and livelihood opportunities for marginalized communities.

Beneficiaries of the SCSP program received comprehensive training on various aspects of cage culture, and Indian Pompano seeds were procured from the marine finfish hatchery of the Vishakhapatnam Regional Centre of ICAR-CMFRI. In November 2022, 4,000 seeds were stocked in two fabricated cages, and after a five-month grow-out period, the Indian Pompano was successfully harvested in batches between June 2 and June 26. The impressive results included an average growth of 400-450 grams, a total harvest of 1,300 kg of pompano, and an exceptional survival rate of 90%.

The beneficiaries sold the harvested fish locally, fetching prices ranging from Rs 450 to Rs. 490 per kg. This successful cultivation not only demonstrates the rapid growth rate and favorable market demand for Indian Pompano but also its ability to reach the preferred table size within a short period of 5-6 months. The research program was led by Dr. A P Dineshbabu and his team of scientists, highlighting the potential for innovative aquaculture practices in the region.

An intergovernmental panel report on biodiversity has raised concerns over the devastating impact of the invasive Caribbean false mussel (Mytilopsis sallei) on Kerala’s native clams and oysters, crucial for local fisheries.

The Caribbean false mussel, originally from the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of South and Central America, has rapidly proliferated in Kerala, displacing native species and disrupting the local ecosystem. Notably, it has also outcompeted another invasive species, the American brackish water mussel (Mytella strigata), which previously posed a significant threat to the region’s waterways.

Researchers speculate that the Caribbean false mussel may have entered Indian waters through ships and subsequently spread to estuaries via smaller fishing vessels frequently traveling between coastal oceanic waters and Kerala’s fishing harbors.

An intriguing hypothesis presented in the report suggests that the spread of this invasive species might have been triggered by tropical Cyclone Ockhi, which struck the Kerala coast in 2017, potentially carrying the Caribbean false mussel into new habitats.

The report, released by the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), highlights numerous case studies of invasive species contributing to the extinction of 60% of global plant and animal species. It emphasizes that the economic cost of invasive alien species exceeded $423 billion annually in 2019, with costs increasing significantly since 1970.

Invasive alien species are recognized as one of the five major drivers of biodiversity loss, alongside land and sea use changes, direct species exploitation, the climate crisis, and pollution. Over 37,000 alien species have been introduced to various regions and biomes worldwide due to human activities. Of these, more than 3,500 are considered harmful invasive alien species, posing significant threats to nature, human well-being, and quality of life.

 

While some alien species were intentionally introduced for their perceived benefits, the report indicates that nearly 80% of documented impacts from invasive alien species on ecosystems and biodiversity are negative. The most frequently reported impact is a reduction in the food supply, affecting various taxa and regions.

 

Additionally, the report underscores that invasive species also have health implications, contributing to the spread of diseases like malaria, Zika, and West Nile Fever, primarily transmitted by invasive alien mosquito species such as Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti.

 

“Invasive alien species have been a major factor in 60% and the only driver in 16% of global animal and plant extinctions that we have recorded, and at least 218 invasive alien species have been responsible for more than 1,200 local extinctions. In fact, 85% of the impacts of biological invasions on native species are negative,” noted Anibal Pauchard, co-chair of the assessment, in a statement.

Rare and Venomous Pufferfish Species Discovered for the First Time in Jamtara IndiaThe district fisheries department in Jamtara, Jharkhand, has made a significant discovery—the presence of a pufferfish species in a local waterbody. This particular variety of carnivorous fish, spotted for the first time in the region, possesses toxins similar to their Japanese counterparts, which can prove fatal to humans.

Ritu Ranjan, the officer from the Jamtara district fisheries department, has taken proactive measures to learn more about this newly detected species. In the absence of any existing records about the fish in the state, she has reached out to the ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR) in Lucknow for further insights.

The pufferfish was found in the vicinity of Paijania village, within a portion of the Maithon Dam that stretches across Jamtara, Dhanbad, and West Bengal. Ranjan expressed, “To the best of my knowledge, there is no prior documentation of pufferfish presence in Jharkhand. Nevertheless, following our discovery, local villagers and fishermen have reported occasional sightings of this variant over the past two years. We have urged them to remain vigilant and notify us whenever they come across this species during their fishing activities, enabling us to conduct a thorough investigation.”

Ranjan also emphasized the inherent danger associated with all pufferfish variants, which are highly venomous and potentially lethal. While studies indicate that pufferfish is consumed in Japan, the preparation requires the expertise of skilled chefs who can meticulously remove the venomous portions to render it safe for consumption.

In Ranchi, a startling discovery has shaken the local community, as more than 8,000 fish were found lifeless in a dam, prompting swift action by the fisheries department. District Fishery Officer, Arup Kumar Chaudhary, revealed that the deceased fish, ranging from 500 grams to 1 kilogram in weight, were discovered in four cages meant for fish rearing at Getalsud dam.

In response to this concerning incident, State Agriculture Minister Badal Patralekh wasted no time and ordered a comprehensive investigation on Saturday evening. Badal has instructed the department secretary to initiate the probe promptly and deliver a report as soon as possible.

Chaudhary and his team are determined to unravel the mystery behind this mass fish mortality. He articulated that there could be various factors contributing to this unfortunate event, such as oxygen depletion, diseases, or pollution. The prevailing suspicion leans towards a lack of oxygen or a possible disease outbreak as the root cause. However, a conclusive determination can only be reached after their investigative efforts are concluded.

According to Chaudhary, maintaining an oxygen level of at least five milligrams per litre in the water is essential for the survival of fish. If this level drops below three milligrams per litre, it can result in fish fatalities. He reassured the public that approximately 300 fish cages in the nearby Maheshpur area, adjacent to the affected site, housing around one and a half tonnes of fish, remain unharmed by this incident.
