Gujarat’s Inland Fishing Output Witnesses Steady Decline Over a Decade

written by Fishery News

Gujarat, India – The value of inland fishing output in the state of Gujarat has shown a persistent decline over the past decade, with the latest figures indicating a drop of 12.7% from Rs 475.76 crore in 2011-12 to Rs 415.17 crore in 2020-31. This concerning trend has seen the state’s inland fishing sector struggle to maintain its previous levels of productivity.

Gujarat reached a peak in inland fishing output value at Rs 500 crore during the fiscal year 2013-14. However, since that high point, the sector has experienced a consistent decrease in its output value, impacting the state’s position in the national rankings.

Currently, Gujarat stands at the 17th position in terms of inland fishing output value among Indian states. The decline in output value has raised concerns among stakeholders and policymakers, highlighting the need for initiatives and strategies to revitalize the state’s inland fishing industry.

The reasons behind this decline could be multifaceted, including environmental factors, changes in fishing practices, and economic challenges. Addressing these issues and implementing sustainable measures could be crucial to rejuvenating Gujarat’s inland fishing sector and ensuring its long-term viability.Top of Form

Bharat Modi, the former president of Porbandar Port Association, has voiced his concerns regarding the significant decline in inland fisheries output in the region. This decline has raised alarms about the sustainability and health of the local fishing industry, which has long been a crucial component of the area’s economy and livelihood.
