Gandhinagar: The coastal region of Gujarat is grappling with a significant challenge as the state government revealed the cancellation of registrations for 3,434 fishing boats in the fiscal year 2022-23. According to government sources, these cancellations were a result of fishermen failing to complete the mandatory physical verification process. It was emphasized that registered fishermen are eligible for essential subsidies on items such as diesel, fishing nets, and other equipment provided by the fisheries department.

However, in response to this revelation, the All India Fishermen Association highlighted a concerning trend. President Veljibhai Masani disclosed that over 5,000 boats along the coastline, spanning from Kutch to Valsad, are currently inactive. Fishermen, facing economic challenges aggravated by the aftermath of the pandemic, are reportedly refraining from venturing into the sea due to inadequate remuneration for their catch.

Masani expressed the association’s concern, stating, “The value of the wood of the boats that are lying unused will not be more than Rs 5 lakh.” This indicates not only the economic strain on the fishermen but also the potential loss of valuable maritime assets that remain stationary along the coastline.

The issue underscores the broader economic impact on the fishing community, emphasizing the urgent need for solutions to ensure fair compensation for their catch. Anticipation is reaching a peak in Kolkata as the State Fisheries Development Corporation (SFDC) prepares to inaugurate the long-awaited Nalban Nature and Aquatic Park this Friday. Managed by SFDC’s dynamic managing director, Soumyajit Das, the park is designed to be a hotspot for fish tourism.

According to Das, the park promises a unique experience for visitors, featuring live angling displays and an opportunity to discover a diverse range of fish species. Culinary enthusiasts are also in for a treat as the park will offer a delectable array of fish dishes to tantalize the taste buds of its guests.

In a bid to enhance the overall experience, the Nature and Aqua Park will boast comfortable cottages for overnight stays, mirroring the successful setup at Eco Island in New Town’s Eco Park. Visitors can revel in a night’s stay and indulge in morning boating and fishing activities, as highlighted by an SFDC official.

Alongside the park inauguration, the SFDC has planned additional attractions, including a new SFDC outlet and a food corner at one of the NKDA markets in New Town. Furthermore, live fish vending vehicles and the new administrative building of Nalban food parks are set to be unveiled on the much-anticipated Friday at Nalban.

The State Fisheries Department has been diligently working on extending the Nalban boating complex towards the Sector-V end of the Nalban bheri in recent years. Chennai: The Sagar Parikrama Yatra Phase-IX concluded triumphantly on Monday in Chennai, marking a significant milestone in the mission to uplift coastal communities, empower fishermen and fisherwomen, and promote sustainable practices in the fisheries sector. The transformative journey, which commenced on October 7, 2023, in Thiruvadanai, Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu, covered a diverse range of territories, including districts in Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry.

With a focus on grassroots engagement, the Phase-IX program witnessed the active participation of approximately 11,100 individuals, including fishermen, fisherwomen, scholars, and various fisheries stakeholders. Notably, around 4,600 fisherwomen contributed to the inclusive nature of the initiative, reflecting a commitment to address the concerns of all segments of the community.

The yatra, spanning nine days, engaged with approximately 32,300 beneficiaries from Tamil Nadu’s entire coastal region and the Union Territory of Puducherry. Beyond symbolism, the initiative aimed to resolve issues faced by fishers and related stakeholders by providing a platform to voice their difficulties and grievances.

Union Ministers and senior dignitaries participated in discussions at the Chennai Fishing Harbour, focusing on the effective utilization of government schemes, particularly the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). The Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying expressed optimism that PMMSY’s implementation would significantly benefit India’s fisheries sector, boosting income for fishermen and fish farmers and enhancing food security and nutrition through increased fish availability.

As part of the culminating events, Union Minister Parshottam Rupala inaugurated infrastructure projects approved under PMMSY, with a total cost of Rs. 9,246.59 lakhs. These projects included the construction of Fish Landing Centers and the expansion of the Fishing Harbour, further enhancing the sector’s capabilities.

During the yatra, Union Minister Parshottam Rupala visited various Fish Landing Centers, engaging with fishermen and fish farmers to appreciate their contributions and discuss improvements in infrastructure and fish handling. Discussions at key locations focused on disease surveillance programs, human resource training, and the promotion of seeding and breeding of fish.

A review meeting with officials from the Department of Fisheries and Animal Husbandry, Government of Tamil Nadu, emphasized the importance of regular monitoring and reporting mechanisms for transparency and trust among beneficiaries. Union Minister Parshottam Rupala encouraged swift implementation of Mobile Veterinary Units (MVUs) to enhance animal health care.

The Sagar Parikrama Phase-IX also included a pre-Saturation campaign focusing on Kisan Credit Cards (KCC), PMMSY, and FIDF. This resulted in the sanctioning of KCC applications worth Rs 531.30 lakhs, benefiting 1,599 fishermen, fish farmers, and fisher societies in eight districts.

In a crucial stride towards understanding and combating Motor Neuron Disease (MND), Dr. Jean Giacomotto, a distinguished researcher from Griffith University, has secured a substantial $299,791 Impact Grant from FightMND. The grant will fuel his groundbreaking research, delving into the role of genes associated with MND, a debilitating neurological condition also known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

Dr. Giacomotto’s focus involves leveraging the zebrafish, a small but powerful freshwater species renowned for its genetic modeling capabilities and versatility in drug discovery. The research aims to intricately manipulate zebrafish genetics to unravel the specific pathogenic contributions of MND risk-genes. Additionally, the team intends to develop optimized zebrafish models for MND, enhancing the potential for drug discovery and pre-clinical studies.

This initiative, made possible by FightMND and its donors, holds significant promise in advancing our understanding of MND and establishing innovative research models. Dr. Giacomotto expressed gratitude for the support, noting that it elevates their work to a new stage and contributes to the global mission of creating a world without MND.

Founded in 2014, FightMND is dedicated to finding effective treatments and a cure for MND. With two Australians diagnosed with MND every day, the urgency of research in this field cannot be overstated. MND comprises a group of diseases affecting nerve cells controlling essential functions like movement, speech, swallowing, and breathing, with no known cure or truly effective treatment.

Dr. Giacomotto’s research, propelled by FightMND’s support, aims to establish two innovative genetic systems. Firstly, these systems will facilitate the study and confirmation of the pathogenicity of different MND-genes. Secondly, they hold the potential to generate stable MND zebrafish models with early phenotypes, crucial for drug screening and discovery.

This research, combined with the expertise of Distinguished Professor Vicky Avery in drug discovery, marks a significant stride towards understanding MND and developing powerful tools for therapeutic interventions. The project stands as a beacon of hope in the quest for innovative solutions for MND patients worldwide.
