Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has directed officials to move beyond temporary relief measures and develop long-term safety arrangements for coastal fishing communities affected by Cyclone Arnab.

During a virtual review meeting from Amaravati, he assessed the cyclone’s impact on coastal areas and discussed measures to address the difficulties faced by fishermen and their families.

Permanent Protection for Uppada Coast

One of the key concerns raised during the meeting was coastal erosion along the Uppada Beach Road in Kakinada district. Pawan Kalyan instructed officials to speed up the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and related work for constructing a permanent protective wall.

The proposed safety structure is aimed at addressing recurring coastal erosion and protecting vulnerable stretches of the coastline. The focus, he emphasised, should be on developing a lasting solution rather than depending entirely on temporary measures after every cyclone.

Fishing Boat Insurance Under Consideration

The Deputy Chief Minister also asked officials to prepare suitable proposals for providing insurance coverage to fishing boats.

Fishing boats, nets and other equipment are essential assets for coastal fishing families. Damage to these assets during cyclones and severe weather conditions can disrupt fishing activities and affect household incomes.

A suitable insurance mechanism could help fishermen manage such losses and improve their financial security during emergencies.

Faster Compensation for Affected Families

Pawan Kalyan directed officials to ensure that compensation reaches every eligible family affected by the cyclone without unnecessary delays.

He stressed the need to assess the damage and take appropriate steps to support affected households. He also stated that he would personally visit fishing villages after Diwali to understand the problems faced by coastal communities and review the ground situation.

Focus on Long-Term Fishermen Welfare

The directions highlight the need for a broader approach to coastal disaster management. Along with immediate relief and compensation, measures such as coastal protection infrastructure, fishing boat insurance and timely assistance can help reduce the long-term financial risks faced by fishing communities.

For fishermen who depend on the sea for their livelihoods, stronger protection systems could make recovery from future cyclones more manageable.

The effectiveness of these measures will depend on how quickly the proposals are converted into action and how efficiently assistance reaches affected families.
